Help With HD Video 5.1 Audio Set Up

I'm in the process of setting up Matrox based HD Video/Audio editing system for a video suite.

The Axiom HD box has the following outputs:
4 Stereo Pairs AES/EBU output
4 Stereo Pairs of HD SDI output

Questions:
1. What make/model device would I need to convert either the AES/EBU or HD SDI output to analog 5.1 to feed the analog inputs of the Genelec 5.1 system (XLR L, C, R, RL, RR inputs with bass management/crossover built into the sub)?

Would this work: http://www.tascam.com/Products/DS-M7_1.html

2. Which is preferable to use - AES/EBU or HD SDI to get the 5.1 audio?

3. Is there a hardware volume control and metering device which can control the 5.1 analog output? Make and model?

4. Is there a box which can do all of these things (convert the AES/EBU or HD SDI signal to analog and provide metering and a volume knob)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. It seems even the manufacturers don't know what devices are needed with their software/hardware to integrate it into a complete system.

i personal like the grace m906 and it comes with aes/ebu connections standard. you dont have to buy a card like with the tascam. only draw back is that it only works up to 5.1

if

If you use the HD-SDI signal, you will need a demuxing device to extract the audio from the signal. I would stick with AES/EBU. We have a Tascasm DS-M7.1, and like it. It doesn't have meters, but it will do 7.1, and if you calibrate your room (as you should), then the SPL readout on its volume control will be meaningful.

You will need to buy AES/EBU cards for the Tascam, but they are not terribly expensive. The whole package is a good value IMO.

Jonathan / Angelo:

Thank you both SO much for the info. and suggestions. I was really stumped on this one since I'm an audio guy and not really versed on video.
