Has anyone used the ADAM S4X? I'm torn between the S4X and the Genelec 103's

I recently spent a short amount of time with Adam S3As and they sounded better than any Genelec I've ever heard |

| I was mixing at a studio with the Adams S3As. After one day I had them change them for the genelecs they had in another room. Much happier after the change.

![]() like I said, when I got the genelecs (1030 with sub) system, I thought I couldn't mix anymore (if I ever could)... for me, in my friends studioroom, it's the S3a with sub12.

It's a pretty personal thing -- I happen to prefer the ADAMs. Have not heard their new line yet.

I mixed a song on Genelec's top end monitors at my school, then took the mix to many different places to listen. My mix wasn't quite up to my liking. I took the tracks home, and did some experimenting on my Adams A7's (Not Adam's top end by any means). Turns out the mix I did on my A7's translated MUCH MUCH better. But then again... personal preference. There might have been something weird about the room at school as well.

I own a pair of 1029's for my mac set up at home and they may be too friendly.

YMMV, but I could never get mixes that translate out of Genelecs, and I tried a bunch of them. With ADAM all that changed. They may not be as fun to listen to, but if you trust them, your mixes will translate.

Find a shop that will let you try both. Or see if you can order both pair on a credit card and return the set you don't like. I'm still on the hunt for the best monitor for me (and I've listened to a lot of friggin monitors). To date I'm most happy with the Adams that are on the console bridge right now, but I'm willing to change if I find something better for me. Point is you need to try them.

It's not the speaker, it's the room bro. If you like ribbon tweeters and the way they respond then Adam, if you like metal dome tweeters and accentuated low end, you'll probably prefer Genelec. Ultimately, each of those are going to sound either comfortable or not depending on how the room is tuned, the D/A, etc...

Hi there, On this subject i am quite versed, I know both Genelecs and ADAM's very well. I believe Genelecs make a mixer work to a standard, as in when i reference mixes alongside my own there is a clear picture as to what needs to be done to get the mix to sparkle like the reference on Gen's. With the ADAM however listening to reference mixes made me work a lot harder to attain a certain sonic balance, as in there is no sparkle on mixes like there is on Gen's, unless the engineer put some sparkle in there. Its like the difference between Apogee(Gen) and Mytek(ADAM), signal passing through a mini-dac instantly makes a cohesive familiar sound (maybe because so many artists use apogee)... whereas Mytek has a "surprise" aspect to the sound... you just focus in on all the details forever if you like. I have heard my favorite mixes on A7's and 8040's, FWIW they are both top-notch and as far as translation goes, if you can get your mixes to sound great on either of these, you can be confident it will sound great everywhere... however personally I would invest in ADAM's myself. CHUR! |

| Adam S3VX versus Genelec 1032
I am currently using the Adam S3VX, I have switched to them from Genelec 1032a. To me, the Adam has a much better stereo image and the bass extends down to 40Hz. These speakers let me hear the minutest detail whenever I do anything to the tracks. Even the slightest tweak on the EQ can be heard on the Adam. So in terms of accuracy, these are the most accurate. I also have a pair of KRK VXT6 and Yamaha HS80M to check my mixes with. In my opinion, nothing comes close to the Adam yet. |

Plenty of hit records were mixed on Genelecs. I don't know if the same goes for ADAMs.

Both are good speakers, although I personally don't get along with Genelecs, but I do like Adams (I have a pair of A7s myself). The bigger Genelecs are IMHO better, (1031 etc...) but the 80xx series just does my head in...

Plenty of hit records were made with 4trackers, SM57s etc. which many people here don't like... That said. For me, Adams any day. Genelecs (IMO) don't tell the whole truth. They are "to god sounding", which leads to worse mixes, because you think the mix is ready far before it really is, if you know what I mean...With Adams you have to work harder but the mixes also translate much better...Of course only my opinion..Gens for 10 years, Adams for the last 1,5...Never going back. I've used Gens in many diferent places and always have the same problems so it has to be the speaker (and not only one of them, I've tried 1030, 1031, 8040, 8050 many times, always the same)... -- Mikko |
