How do I dial in my sub?

I have Adam a7's with a Tannoy TS10 sub. The sub has a crossover and so far I've just set it around 80 and used my ears. Didn't know if there was a more accurate method.

Hi John. I'm just about to do that myself. I've read one description at Real Traps homepage. And there's another one (really really serious...) in the Avocet manual downloadable from Crane songs homepage. Nothing in your Tannoy manual? Could be some item specific things but probably not...

I bought it used, and there really isn't much info on it. Just want to make sure it's representing things accurately.

Avocet manual

BTW, I figured that the CD suggested in the manual could be replaced by a software synth with a sine wave synth bass.

He, he, just read the Tannoy manual. Guess that's what you mean with really isn't much info on it

Yeah, like I said, not many tips in the manual. Their suggestion is to set the crossover freq to what my Adams suggest and then adjust accordingly. I figured that much out by myself. I guess I'm wondering if there is any technical way I could make sure I'm setting the crossover up correctly - or will I just have to do it by trial and error?

Yes, 80 Hz is the preferred crossover frequency. But adjusting a subwoofer's volume by ear is not very accurate for many reasons - one big reason is music excites only those frequencies present in the key of the current song.

The most reliable way is to measure the LF response at the listening position using room measuring software as you adjust the level:

ETF, Windows, $150
FuzzMeasure, Mac, $150
Room EQ Wizard, Windows and Linux, Freeware
This article explains how I use ETF, but the principles apply to all such programs.
