UM70S available anywhere?

So, based on a single experience with one of the original Gefell UM70Ss and the glowing reviews around here, I have been trying to track one down. Any ideas? Not on ebay, not available through distributors, etc...

I think Mercenary and Atlas Pro Audio sells them...I think Full Compass does too.

I think that the MV692 preamplifier, and modular capsule system, [M69, M93, M70, M94, M71, UM70] are very special, custom order products from MTG, and may-or-may-not be available at the time of inquiry. It is up to MTG, if they will build these products or not.

You have to be patient and keep looking. Keep that cash ready......and you will be rewarded!!!! I got 9 Gefell's including 2 UM70/692's from a buddy who's a high end scoring engineer. I was lucky. Really lucky. Hang in there and - Good luck!!!! It will be worth it.

they are in the gefell website

Startseite Microtech Gefell GmbH

go to "accessories" then "studio condensor microphones"

and you will see them.

any gefell dealer should be able to get them. they are not rare or anything "vintage"..just not sold commonly anymore..(the SMS2000 series replaced the SMS70 series(sms70=mv692 bodies and aforementioned capsules)

Is that the "S" silent version (decreased self-noise) with the 80 volt charging plate, output transformer, low cut and -10dB pad? Tuchel or XLR? Is your production run in black matte or satin nickel?

Which M7 capsule version will be in it (NOS or current output)? Modular capsules?

thanks.

Yes, the most recent version of the UM70S/MV692, with XLR, Black Matte, pad/low cut, Modular Capsule System, and a brand Spanking new MTG PVC M7 - the UM70S.

technical sidenote: although the capsule and electronics are the same in the um70s and um70/mv692, the capsules are polarized with a different voltage (80V in the um70s, 60V in the um70/mv692), resulting in a higher sensitivity in the um70.

i got this info from gefell.

Isn't the UM70S more sensitive?

I have one of the new Mercenary run of this microphone. Stunning. Last I spoke with Adam, a number of the 20 (if not all) may be spoken for. So hurry if you're interested...

Let me make sure I have this correct:

The UMT70s is the name for both the capsule and transformerless
preamp -- MV692 with the UM70.

The UM70s is the name for the capsule and transformer-coupled
preamp -- again MV692 and UM70.

Is there a designation on the currently-offered UM70s to indicate that the
preamp body is transformer-coupled?

It doesn't use the same version of the MV692, but its based on the same thing.

UM70S/MV692 is the proper way to put it.

Yes, it is called the MV692 preamplifier. This is the version with the transformer.

But that's also the name of the transformerless version?

No, its called the UMT70S, and does not add that model number into its part number. Again, the amplifier shares some design implementation, but it is not the same thing as the MV692.

Are mine with or without transformers?

I love my pair of MG UM-70S, but with all this discussion, I'm not sure which version I have. It is called the UM-70S P48.

Shortly after the fall of the Berlin wall, ads started to appear claiming the original Neumann plant, having been behind the iron curtain, was still operating as Microtech Gefell. The ads claimed they were still hand making M7 capsules, as used in the U-47, and now these mics could be purchased in the USA. It was called the Microtech Gefell UM-70S. They came in wooden boxes and included their own separate shock mounts. The only disappointing thing about these mics are the shock mounts. The bird cage design does not clasp the microphones tightly enough. There is a rubber pad inside that is supposed to grasp the mics, but it is not sticky enough and if you turn the mic upside down in it (as with a Blumlein setup), it will fall right out. However, I'm very pleased with everything else about these mics. The printing on the mics (with the MG logo and the company name) was simply silk screened on the metal casing, so it wears off with use. The actual mic model and serial number is engraved on the bottom of the mic where it accepts an XLR cable.

I asked to purchase a "matched pair". I got two with consecutive serial numbers, but I don't think the factory ever actually matched up mics by testing to be honest. However, I've used these as stereo pairs in both XY Coincident and Blumlein and they sound fantastic. I've also used them on singers, both male and female, with wonderful results. Each is patten selectable with omni, figure 8, and cardiod which you select by turning the ring at the bottom of the capsule.

I was always surprised that these didn't catch on more. I got my pair when they were first being marketing in the US. I have a vintage Telefunken U-47, and while I wouldn't say these sound the same, there is a certain quality about them that is reminiscent of the U-47 perhaps due to the capsule.

So, are my UM-70S P48 with a transformer or transformerless? Either way I'm happy. They are quiet, and sound great. I wouldn't change a thing about the mics, just maybe a better shock mount.
