Josephson C42 Matched pair. Through Millennia HV3D, or Gorden, Or GML 8302.
Occasionally I will use a Royer SF-12 when "that" Ribbon tone is desired.
In a blue moon I will bust out my Neumann SM2 Stereo Mic. - But it better be a damn fine Drummer for that to happen.

Bro, I'm using R84's M160's, 4038's or an R88 for overs and its smooth as glass. Why no love for ribbons? The sound is inviting and your ears melt into the speaker. Especially when going though the VT2!! When ribbons are in the right place they make you a better engineer. I guarantee, you would have a really excellent overhead sound with any of these aforementioned ribbons for any kind of drum sound. FOK Stereo ribbons through a VT2 is insane. I like the R84's through the VT2 most though. Its not even fair. Acoustic GTR and Vocal anyone? Its like Wes and Doug transport you to an old RCA studio with a better noise floor. At the end of the day the choice is all just a texture thing, so far be it for me to tell you which way to roll. There are many, many SDC"s that are highly favorable for me personally. Too many to list. I'm pretty biased, but in my experience the MFG KM69's have provided really excellent results in ORTF and X/Y. I like the KM69 because its works all over the place not just overheads. I've always liked LDC's there, until I started using ribbons.

cmc6, mk21. Fast enough to handle the transients, proximity right to get the low end, mellow enough to contain symbols. t.

I'm at Water Music in NJ right now doing a record with U64s on the OHs. They sound great!

Back in my home turf, I really dig Manley Golds and BLUE Bottles with B6 capsules.

In other words...something with tubes

451's, 87's.. I like the R84's, but haven't loved them up there. Although, I really dig them in front of the kit, Blumlein, waist high..

451's have been my go-to, but I seem to go back to 414eb's frequently. I have a pair of AKG The Tube's which are good for some things but nowhere near a C12. And then Blue Dragonfly's if i'm feelin nasty.

Don't have any ribbons in the closet yet. Headed there next with my purchases and the R84 and R88's are top of the list.

gefell M71s or UM70 card mode - NOTHING is as balanced and rocking as the M71s though. Also, if I'm looking for a SDC sound, I'll go with KM84's...

For me it's usually 451's but I'll use a pair of 87's once in a while when I'm feeling super cool!
I'll run them through my OSC 500 series pre's...

Adam so the only reason I said no ribbon is I did not think the VT-2 could push them but I would love some M160 being a huge Hendrix fan Oh and Guitar amps so VT-2 and ribbons OK then KOOL

I guess I'm old school (or is that just old now)... yes ribbon of course, but otherwise...

AKG C12A's or 414EB's are my first choice, sometimes Sony C37A's, U67's or U47's... all of these mic's keep the cymbals as smooth as ribbons. but capture a bit more detail IMHO. There is a reason these are used/heard on many of your favorite classic albums.

451 s for jazz or light. 4038 for a fuller body to the overs. 414 for in the middle.

I usually use a UA 2610 pre or API.
