I confess, I don't know what 'Olympic style' is...? Did Olympic have a special technique for stereo mic'ing?

fantastic microphones...and a great company.

i really need to get a pair of those bova balls...everytime i have had a chance to use them on drums, i'm very happy. sound great on acoustic guitars too.

one of my favorite drum sounds ever was a bova ball directly into my spectrasonics 610 limiter...mono.

cheers,

KSM141, AT4047 are my current go-to's in my collection. have also had luck with the Oktava MC012 in the past. preamp is usually my Sytek, and it sounds great for this

I've recorded that before . Altought it wasn't trough a pacifica ( it was true systems) .

I gotta say that for really loud drummers , nt-5 wasn't a good choice cuz i'd got lots of distortion and lack of transients . ANyways , to many tracks it'd just do the job properly .

I'm kindda curious about km 184 , never tried it before . I really like small diaph. mics as OH .

Usually 414 TLII's via Sytek pre's in my own project studio. Sometimes I'll run those through my Avalon 747 to use the graphic EQ for some openness and air.

I've also been liking the Shadow Hills Mono GAMA pre's for OH duties lately.

I love ribbons for overheads and almost always use them, but if it's gotta be condensers, I've used an old pair of 451e mics with success, and definitely +1 on the CM7s.

I'm way into 414s. And R121s. Ribbons usually sound great--R84s, Coles 4038s...they all sound fantastic for cymbals...takes off their edge sometimes.
All these mics work well with my API.

I've already posted to this thread and this is not much different than before but I've been really digging it on some recent sessions:
RE20 -kick
SM57 - snare
MK012 - bottom snare
MK012 - Hat
audix D2 - Rack toms (2)
ATM-25 - Floor Tom
Peluso P12 (2) - overheads

ULN-8 for pres and converter. Sounds awesome.

SF12 into a GML pres. plus SM57 on snare, SM52 kick, 441 on the Snare bottom, and KM84 on the hat.

Nudge tracks if needed to get the snare, snare bottom and kick in phase when mixing (i record in the room, so I can always get the phase perfect).

EQ plugins, just to shape / filter as needed on the kick, snare, snare bottom, but leave the Overhead alone (no plugins). Run all out of PTHD into a GML 8200 and GML 8900. Bring the overheads up by itself and eq / compress to get a great sound, then add kick, snare, snare bottom and hat as needed to fill-in a bit. Tweak if needed - Treat the drums as one stereo instrument.

I found this to give a very natural, clear sound of the drums, and it's sits in the mix very nicely.

+1 on peluso p12's for overheads!!!!

i have 3 451eb's with ck1's, that i use two for overheads and one on the snare top with a dynamic audix i5, and love it..

i have had great luck with the TLM49 F.O.K., slammed through the distressor and rolled off hi's with the mercury eqp1.

D6 on kick, D4 on floor tom.

usually and LDC on snare bottom.

C414, Gefell M930, U87

Been rocking the good ol' 414's through API 512c lately. Definitely solid and a great go-to.
Has anyone tried the Gefell M930s as OH? I had some for about 8 months and LOVED them with a pair of Calrec 1161s.
Also, gotta love the U87 - 1073.

I need to get some ribbons to try as OH. My bank account is going to hate me. Probably gonna start with a mono 4038. Maybe an R88, though.

Km84's, 4038's, R121's, U87's, 414's, QTC40's, and fatheads seem to cover all the bases.

C414s or NT4. I'd like to pick up another P12 one of these days and then they would live on overheads...

I've got a pair of P12s in the classifieds right now.

For the last two years, they have been my OHs of choice.
But then I got bored and started switching it up again.
Lately I've been into a pair of 451s.
I would like a second Bock 151 to do stereo- I've had great results with it as mono OH and front of kit.

I've had good results with a pair of coles 4038s.
here is a link to some drums recorded that way:
Jukebox | Megasonic Sound
the track "april Fools" by the Ken Berman Trio.

It always comes down to SDC vs LDC or tube LDC.
and then the ribbon option...
drums can keep you busy with a lifetime of experimentation!
there's never one answer except:
you need a GOOD DRUMMER or none of it matters...

Try a pair of AT 4033's if you can. Similar to MKo12's on overheads, but smoother and "silkier" sounding, IMHO.

Thanks, man. I'll definitely consider it. Right now it was going to be a toss up between a pair of MK012's or MC930's.

These SR25s are just aren't giving me the sound I want for overheads.

Just used AT4051a's in ORTF, AT4031's for spots on hi-hat and ride, and a Mojave MA-200 for a room mic. Sounded great! Can't wait 'til mix day.

I tried the Fathead II Lundahls in M-S set up about 5' in front of the kick in a short (7') basement studio recently and was really happy with the results.

Recently did a huge OH shootout.

Gefell UM70/M71S
U87
C414B-ULS
451E
KM84

against a bunch of Joly modded mics :

Joly Editions K47H's
Joly Editions 603PE's
Joly Editions NT1a's
Joly Editions RSM5's
Joly Editions 205's
Joly Editions 219PE's
Joly Editions 012's

Faves for me on this recent shootout were the M71S's for an aggressive sound, KM 84's for a warm retro sound, K47H for a big and fast sound, 603PE's for a very detailed "under the microscope" sound, and the 205's for the classic big ribbon sound.
