The M201 RULES on Snare! I love this microphone all over the place. It might be one of my favorite dynamic microphones of all time. It has a very awesome condenser like detail. If there is a better dynamic microphone than a SM57 for the task at hand, its probably this microphone-IMO.
The E22s is an enormously capable microphone, when compared to most SDC on any part of the kit: kick/snare/toms/OH/Floor/room/electric/bass/percussion/acoustic/ its a "whatever you got" kind of microphone. "Punch" is a word that only begins to describe the E22s response for drums and loud instruments. Loud GTRS and Bass will laugh at you, and the tom sounds that these things yield should be illegal.

I really wanna get one of those Telefunken M80s after reading that killer Green Day thread over in So Much Gear... And listening to the Green Day CD and the clips on Tele's website, it seems realistic. Only 240 bucks, but will it really be better than our trusty SM57s and i5s? We'll see.

I prefer a KM84 on snare. Magic mic for that application, IMO.

I still wanna give the Telefunken and the Beyer a shot, but the PR30 has been a huge step up from the 57 on snare.

I think my favorite snare mic to date has been a U-48... though the M-80 and the TAB mod for the SM-57 don't suck by a long shot... nor does the Beyer 201, or a 251... and an AKG C-451 EB with a 20db pad can be a real crowd pleaser if you can find one in good condition.

I LOVE the AT4050 on snare. Might need to use an inline pad, though, because the signal can be really hot.

I love the Beyer M201, it's also my fave mic for acoustic guitar! But even though the M201 can be great on snare, there are many times when it's still the 57 for me.
The SM7b is also great on snare for a slightly less raw sound.

Man, I've always so wanted to put the 84 on snare - but I can't think of any drummer where I've felt secure enough to say, "yeah Mooka, I put your 84 on snare, but I TRUST this drummer..."
Or maybe I'm being dense - those of you using the 84 on snare, do you place it somewhere out of reach of even the most wildly imprecise stick-handlers?

I have heard good things, but have not had the chance to play with them.
I do agree with the 201 on snare, and it is a rugged mic and more versatile than a 57 for my tastes. I grew up with the 57 as THE mic on the top of the snare and the 441 on the bottom, and I bought a bunch of mics after I got a small settlement from getting smashed up in a car accident. The 201 was one of them, and I recall the day I tried it on a snare. I smiled |

There was a lot about the stock 57 that I liked on snare, and then some things I didn't like. The TAB 57 seems to not suffer from those issues...boxy lower mids, sibilant upper mids. I also picked up a Shure SM77 recently and I'm really digging that too. The bottom end is a little lighter than the 57, and the midrange is a tad different. But it compliments the snare drum really well.
Here's a cool shootout where you can hear some different mics on snare including the SM77: Music page of BentSound - MP3 music page on SoundClick
My other favorite is the Heil PR30. The i5 is a great mic but for my tastes it's way too scooped on snare. It makes my upright piano sound great though.

my beyer 201 aint letting me down!
57's if I have a nice pre to run it into (I.e. 1073, TG2) but the Beyer on a lower impedance (300ohms) works really well!

No... They are transformerless unlike the old ones. They are really bright sounding... Too bright for me. Quote:
