best way to reduce gain after summing box

i know there a quite a lot of posts about summing but could not find any infos on this.

after summing 16 channels with my neumann summing card i go into the api 2500 and after that into the api 5500 eq.
as i really like what the make up gain in the 2500 is doing i usually have a signal thats to loud for recording.
what would be the best / easiest way (without using a mixer) to reduce the gain before going back into the box?

i know i could just not drive the output of the 2500 that hot but its just so sweet!

Of course, if you make summing - the overall level will high because each track of 16 add +2-3db into final mix.
Btw, what is input level of API 2550, I can not find this info on site.... though I can assumption for ~ +18-20 db as minimum.... so, it is not enough for receiving signal from summing card?

I.e 2500 is overloaded?
