Thread Starter | Differences of tape formulations - SM900, SM911, SM468 and PER528?
I have my 1/4" Telefunken aligned to PER528 and think or having it re-aligned to a different tape type which is more "studio grade" quality. Could someone roughly explain the sound differences of the other formulas which are available these days? SM468 SM900 SM911 Thanks!

Get a reel of each, align the machine and take a listen for yourself. If you don't know how to align a machine... LEARN [it's not that difficult]. Tape machines should at the very least have their alignment checked before every session... kinda like you tune a guitar before you record it.

![]() Yes, I guess aligning is one of the things one should learn to do. Thing is that I have a recording next week where I have to dump stuff and want to try a higher quality tape than what 528 offers, so this will a blind pick this time (as I don`t have the time to learn how to align the machine myself until then), so I'd just go with one kind of tape, have my machine aligned by a service guy and start from there. Any rough estimates on the sound characteristics of those three, so I can decide which of the three tapes I`d like to try this time? | |

I use per 528 and Sm 468 and the best word to describe the difference is the sm 468 has more highs than 528 ..... But i would also like to know the sound difference between all this tapes . Anybody |
