Great site to hear samples of high end audio gear

Hear the Gear | Download Free Audio Samples | VintageKing.com They have pre's, EQ's and compressors. I downloaded most of them, put them in Samplitude on their own tracks and A/B them. Very helpful to know the sound and character of the gear. They have it in a Wave file as well as MP3. Very interesting to hear difference between Great River, Portico and Neve.

This may help reduce some of the madness on gearslutz with so many questions on which is the better pre, EQ or compressor. Now you can make your own decision.

One thing regarding the DW Fearn VT-7 on the samples. The VT-7 seemed to soak up the kick drum a little on the rock mix. This is because the HP filter was not activated on the unit. I have worked with the VT-7 enough to know it was not on for that test.

Agreed, I noticed the same thing on the Fearn sample.

You cannot make any decisions about what a piece of gear sounds like through samples on the internet.... I've stated why in many posts in the past.

I agree with you 100% Tony. But the samples give a better idea on the character of gear compared to the opinions of faceless people on gearslutz who don't even own the gear they comment on. Then we get pages and pages of threads were they argue back and forth. We of course learn who we can trust like Roundbadge and others.

For anyone who feels these kind of examples tell you something... Do a search for how variables affect separate performances with these type of tests. There is absolutely nothing to be gained from a preamp test, unless variables are eliminated. Otherwise, the differences you hear are actually the variables and not the actual differences between one piece and the next. Anyway, do a search this has been discussed several times here.

I really do wish there was an easy way for people to hear the differences beween popular preamps, and compressors, etc. But, unfortunately with tests like this you end up with a bunch of misinformed people who "think" they know what something sounds like... Which IMO is the worst possible scenario.

for me a certain piece of gear has to work on a certain track in a certain mix. it depends on the source.

I like the sample-idea tough. it can tell unexperienced people that there is no magic box witch makes an awfull singer/guitarist/drummer sound like a pro.

I agree with you Glenn and Tony. The samples do not let you know how the gear will sound in your studio. However it does give you a idea on how the pre's, EQ's and compressor character is.

Same thing with this web site that gives samples of mic's. studio auditions.com/jamroomsessions_home Just move the studio and auditions together to get to the web site. For some reason gearslutz creates ********* when I put them together.

Has anyone heard the Langevin pre? Does it sound similar to any of the pre's that are sampled on Vintage kings's site?
