Matrix Mixing Technique

I was reading this article about The Matrix in Future Music...They were talking about this mixing technique they used on one of Avril Lavigne's songs:
Basically they recorded around 16 backing tracks then ran them through filterbank so each one sat at a specific narrow frequency and threw them all together. I've listened to those mixes, and no way does it sound like 16 tracks, but it does have a very distinctive sound.
Has anyone else tried something like this?

They don't do their mixes.

Mixers like TLA and Serban Ghenea do.

only exception is "complicated", the single had both TLA's and The Matrix' own mix of it, and radio played both - at least across europe.

TLA's mix sounds a bit bigger, beefier drums etc, but the Matrix' mix has a certain charm - and actually works really well on radio too. has kind of a demo feel.

apart from that, all A.L. tracks on her first album were mixed by TLA AFAIK.

btw where did the Matrix go? they haven't really been as visible as you'd think after that monster album where they had these three HUGE worldwide hits - "complicated", "sk8r boi" and "i'm with you". i know they've done album tracks for ricky martin, britney, nick lachey, did an album with liz phair, but have they had another hit?

i know they were working on their own album, was supposed to be released last year on epic. did that ever happen? and if so, anybody know if it is any good?

i thought the work they did on the first Avril record was absolutely brilliant so it's a bit surprising to see that they haven't really been able to sustain that success. on the other hand, perhaps they're not really interested and have their focus elsewhere.

Maybe they got ropped into the Guns-N-Roses fiasco.

Yeah, the song they were referencing was 'Complicated'. I hate that kind of music, but I thought that technique sounded interesting. I'll try it myself sometime.
If I wanted to speculate on why they haven't done any work lately... maybe it's because they made it pretty clear that they were the 'brains' behind the whole Avril operation, when her record company was trying to market her as a sincere singer/songwriter. From a client's point of view, it probably would have been best for them to keep a low profile in that kind of situation.
