I think any settings would completely depends on the vocalist.... Other than that, I will say I sometimes like a little bit of overdrive.

These kinds of posts make me think of the question, "What's your favorite position for the steering wheel in your car? Straight, right, left, a little right, a little left?" Kinda depends, I guess... |

I usually move the red knob/switch from the off position. Seems to work pretty well. ![]() D |

For tracking? choose the right mic.set gain to get a good level.start recording almost always cut vocals flat[no eq] i've added hi's to an RCA 44 here and there or maybe a lil 10 or 12K for some presence on a 67,etc but.. Quote:
Mixing? Sure,anything goes.but not always Neves | |

a) I never almost use EQ when tracking vocals. b) If I did, it would be completely dependent on the vocalist, and in particular the mic. I hate these threads.

A good reason to track vocals without eq is the day when the artist wants to redo a couple of lines. "off" is a very fast and easy eq setting to recall and remember. I learned this the hard way. |

Think of EQ as a magnifying glass of sorts. You may want to bring out the good parts but still keep the balance of the overall sound. I find that very little EQ can often work wonders and with a 1073-type preamp there is a difference with the EQ in even when everything is set to flat. Since vocals very often are recorded to a complete backing track, I think it's pretty reasonable to apply EQ when necessary or so desired since you're hearing the big picture. Think of it as makeup, it may not be necessary on a beautiful woman (seen my Avatar? I think it's much the same with EQ, it may not always be 'necessary' but it often is helpful if done right for getting a more exciting (or arousing

I prefer flat also. sometimes just a lil boost from the high shelf. But Ive found that its very easy to ruin it. It was one of my biggest deceptions, the 1073s eqs. I almost never use it and I dont like the way they sound that much, maybe a 60hz boost on that bass or kick...for the rest I much prefer a plugin! Or my new amtec! e , love to bash high end gear

What ever sounds best in context? Depends on the singer and how the singer couples with the microphone? Why a 1073? Why not a ________?
