Stupid question about Apogee AD16x (setting gain)

I've got the opportunity to pick up an Apogee AD16x, thinking I should go for it, but the only thing I'm trying to figure out is how the levels are set?

I'm using a Mackie Onyx 1200F into Logic 8, and would be using the Apogee's 16 channels via ADAT into the Mackie

Are the gain levels in the Apogee set by software configuration?
If yes, then does that mean I need an extra cable between the Apogee and my PC for Config?

Thanks

...actually, maybe I'm confused

The Apogee AD16x is an AD converter, ONLY... isn't it?
ie, you can't just plug a mic into it... you'd need an external mic pre... ?

Are you referring to the Reference trims, or software input routing? The AD16x has precise input trims that allow you to calibrate the inputs to the analog equipment to be used. If you are using an ADAT link between the AD16x and another device, you are not going to be using any Apogee Software to control the device, and you don't need anything other than a cup of coffee and some patience. On the AD16x itself, you simply scroll to the CAL flashing indicator, and you can now globally trim the 16 inputs as you see fit. The manual explains the whole procedure at length. For input routing and levels, you'll need to use the Mackie software's DSP mixer/router for controlling levels pre-software.

Correct. You need Microphones feeding preamps, preamps feeding AD converters. The AD16x is a 16 Channel Stand Alone AD converter.

Welcome to the high-end world! You can get enough great pres for well under $10K. Consider the api 3124+. Four superb professional channels for $3500. Or there's the UA 8110: eight channels for $5700 right now at Sweetwater. The Lynx Aurora has excellent converters for $2000. Why shoot for the top Apogees right now? Better preamps and mics are more important. You've got to pay for good stuff, but your cost estimates are inflated.

You know, thing is I was kinda under the impression that I was in the high-end world!

Mackei 1200F + 800R ain't cheap! *No mackie slagging fellas, I've heard enough!* Hell of a lot more functionality, better build than the majority of the other crud out there, but in all honesty I didn't even hear about Apogee or Lynx or half the stuff you guys talk about until I paid more attention to this site

Your right though, I need to get away from the idea that I can't do anything with my tools unless they're the best (that's just me, always has been in regards to everything). Fact is, I can do a lot of great stuff with what I've got, so I think i'll work on that for the moment. Until I have a house which I won't be leaving for a long time, I'll stick with the mackies!
