Can I ask what for? A friend of mine (couple years back or more) took one of those little sony stereo mics and a mini dat player (of couse no one uses them anymore) but recorded waves and then went into a forest and recorded nature (birds, etc) (too much weed) just to have and man it sounded AMAZING... I'm sure someone else might have a more in depth answer as far as what freq capture waves but to me it seems as though almost anything decent in a recorder would work.

Only my 2 cents..

2 years ago while on vacation in Jamaica my 15 yr. old son and I recorded the sounds of the waves and wake hitting the beach at night when there weren't a lot of people on the beach. We also recorded the night sounds of the insects in the shrubs and trees as well as steel drum bands performing. We did this to accompany our camcorder and camera shots for our vacation digital photo album. iphoto and imovie.

G4 867 laptop w/PT LE and an Mbox. I didn't want to bring a large or expensive mic
so I brought an Octava condensor. Worked great for my purposes. if you have a more professional setting I imagine a boom mic with a wind screen would be the ticket.
Jules suggestion would also be a good.
Perhaps the Avenson STO-2 mics would be good as well. Very small and inexpensive.

to mix into some tribal percussion tracks- and also 'just to have'

it's nice to fall asleep to good sounds of the sea- sometimes necessary when boxed up in a concrete zoo.

JJ Golden at Golden Mastering added some really nice ocean to a record he mastered that I mixed. You might want to contact him. He does a great job in mastering as well...

The C414 xls could be the ticket. With the pattern selection, you'd have some options.

I like the Earthworks mics for accurate recordings, but if this is going to be background noise, accuracy may not be that important. You could buy a pair of omnis and a pair of cardioids. The 25kHz cardioid mics (don't remember the new naming conventions) would be just the ticket for directional on-location mics.

I recently recorded some waterfalls, which are similar 'white noise' type sounds. I got excellent results with an Audio Technica shotgun and a lowly EV 635a.

If I was going to the shore, I would definitely bring a Zeppelin.

The Neumann stereo shotgun mic. I forget the model number, but it's designed for stereo location recording. It sounds amazing.

If you are in Cali, there are rental houses in LA that rent to film and post. They always have that mic for like $100/ day. It's a model RS-something.

MS with Schoeps mics - the usual film recordist setup. Also, Sanken mics are a good choice for the sfx recording. Check their CMS series. What about that Soundfield mic? ...No matter what you'll choose, don't forget the Rycote wind protection!
Best of luck!
PS: I would not go for shotguns when recording atmospheres; they sound unnatural.

SoundField if you want imaging and to indicate motion. If tis mono then there's lots of choices in omni.

Neumann KMR 81 or AKG 460/480 with the short shotgun. Use a Rycoat or salt spray will ruin the capsule.
