| Lives for gear | what sound (s) are you after? What sources will you be recording? What is the signal chain after the mic? These are just a few questions that at the bear minimum may enable the slutz to offer you help in choosing the worlds best mic cheers. Ben Sneesby

My suggestion is to buy Lynn Fuston's CD that has tons of mic samples on them and just pick the one that sounds best to you. You can also go to the listeningsessions.com and check some out there too. Good luck

The art of using microphones involves, among other things, choosing the right mic for each source. And even if your source is only Vocals, different singers sound better on different mics. The most expensive mic in the world might sound like *dog doo* on the wrong singer. And some great vocal tracks have been recorded on mics that cost less than $75. When I began serious recording, I tried out about thirty different quality mics searching for what sounded best on my voice. After a while, I sold my $3000 mic, even though it sounded wonderful, because I was happier with the sound I was getting from a couple different mics that cost around $400. You are off to a fairly good start with the U-87 and AKG 414. Instead of spending a ton on one expensive mic (unless you can try it out first and prove beyond a doubt that it is the perfect mic for you) you are better off buying a small assortment of quality inexpensive mics, such as the Audio-Technica 4047 and 4050, the Shure SM7-B, maybe a BLUE Blueberry, etc. (Those are all great Vocal mics -- if you want a mic for other sources, there may be more appropriate choices.)

| SM57! There is no universal best microphone. The one that sounds best on a particular source and fits within the mix structure of the song is the best. Even that is subjective to your ears and taste. |

| Damn it, I know what the best mic is: It's the one I have right now. Also, my opinion is well thought out, more researched and of course I have more experience that most cats here. ![]() Of course, I like my Lawson L47 and L251. Take it from there. |

![]() Is there a best color? Everyone has their favorites but like a painter has a palette with different colors, so an engineer has different mics. By the way, black is my favorite color (which would be the equivalent to a vintage C12 )

| Everyone's going to have their own opinion of what the "best" microphone in the world is, but if I got to choose and money us no object, then for me it would be Neumann U47 long body chrome top. After all, if it's good enough for The Beatles and Frank Sinatra, it's good enough for me That being said, my opinion in a U47's wooden box is worth the wooden box ![]() |

| Really? Then I'd say a Neumann M-149. (Sony 800-G, Neumann M-150?) Ooh, I forgot the Manley Gold Reference. These are all TOP NOTCH, and will get you a great sound on anything you put in front of them. |

| Dream Catcher | Your "best" microphone relies on the voice presented. What is the microphone that fits your voice best? Now that is what you should ask. Are you recording others? Male? Female? Your question is very vague. |

| As others have stated so far, the "best" microphone depends upon what you are trying to achieve and what sound you want. Having stated that however, if what you mean by "best" is the most accurate, then almost any model by Schoeps, Earthworks, or DPA will be very accurate, within certain slight variations. For the most part, these brands have little to no "sound" of their own. In other words, if you want a laboratory-grade reproduction of the actual sound wave at the point in space that the microphone is located, without regard to actual sound quality, per se, then the above models, along with a few others are the way to go, because only accuracy can be directly measured and compared. If on the other hand, you want a particular sound, then the advice given by many on this forum as well as opinions from top recording engineeers, would be one good place to start. I hope this helps.
