HYDROGYN - The making of "Bombshell"

I was thinking to put up a series of videos from the production process, a snippet of one song on it's way from pre-pro all the way through the mix in it's different stages. It would be a series of short videos of the band recording that song (or a part of it) as they become available. The sound would mostly come off the camera mic, unless I can somehow sync it up with the board mix. Would you guys and girls be interested in something like that?

I think it would be absolutely fantastic and very instructional. Almost like a free mini-visit to one of your workshops!

Cool, I get going on this.

Question: what do you Web guys use to compress from a Quicktime movie (well over 200 Mb) with 16 bit/48kHz sound to something around 2-3 Mb with decent looking video and MP3 stereo soundfile, compatible for Mac and PC? I'm on a Mac and I have FCP, AfterFX etc.

Hi Michael,

Really looking forward to this! Great idea.
Asked the video-guys here (I work at a post-production house) and they always use the Sorensen 3 compression of Quicktime pro, fifteen keyframes 320x240, or smaller
resolution.

Cheers, Julian

PS: forgot the sound! I 'like' IMA 4:1 16bit mono 32K

Thanx Julian, I'll check that out.

Well, here is the first little clip. It's preproduction at Thunder Bay Studio in Ashland, KY.

Part of pre-production for me is checking out the gear the band is using and deciding what has to be done. In this case we needed to get the guitars set up, so they stayed in tune, as you will hear at the end of the song. The sound is coming from the camera mic and has been further mangled by the video/audio compressor. Notice my little "workstation" in the middle of the room, I like to be in there with the band for this part of the project to get a better feel for everything.

I'm working on making the files smaller and better quality. Let me know if both platforms can open the file.

Here ya go:
HYDROGYN -Big Star- pre production

Hope it works, have fun.

Worked fine here. OSX.3.9 on an older mac. I think it looks fine and the sound off the camera is surprisingly good. they must really have thier 'ensemble' sound dialed in. Or did you tweak their PA and room?

Thaks for sharing.

No, the only thing in the PA is the voice. I have the feeling that the compressor in the camera circuit does a decent job on glueing stuff together. We recorded the session with 6 mics plus the bass DI. I'll see if I can find some of the board sound, it was pretty impressive for just a few mics.

thanks for the video, michael, this should be very interesting indeed.

so, do you ever do other types of music at your workshops? i find myself wishing for a sweet acoustic ensemble: vocals, backing singers, guitar (maybe nylon string), drums and bass, piano, and a string quartet.

now THAT is something i'd pay to workshop on.

Works here..that singer is hot.. I'll watch more of this,

Hey Michael ..it's easy to make a cable run for the 2 mix to camera..provided the operator isn't gonna do crazy running moves etc..you'll always have a decent mix to camera..
I've done this at various studios a bunch of times for shooting documentary stuff... just a 2 pair of XLR [50 foot run is usaully good for the control room..and another seperate 50-100 footer pair for the tracking room, size dependent.. [seperate patch] tied together [if camera is 2 xlr in]
or just headphone out to 1/8 inch mini adapter..just make sure the connection at camera is safety tied off..so a little tug doesn't kill the inputs.
just have to mind the cables..[interns are great for that !]
then you always get a good clean 2 mix .
I've even done wireless 2 mix sends to various cameras for bigger budget stuff..total freedom of movement
just make sure the camera inputs are line, in manual gain
Great idea!
Look forward to seeing more! thumbsup

Thanx for the advice. I normally want the sound from the camera mic, but it's easy to sync up the board mix in FCP if needed. For some of the next videos it might be better to have the recorded sound rather than the camera mic, so you can hear what went to "tape".
