High end small format desk

What is the high end desk in the small format arena. Is Toft ATB series the best now or? I did a search and seems like there isn't really anything and people are trying to get someone to build one.

What I'm talking about is a small format, does not have to be rack mounted but not much bigger than the toft, analog mixer with good high end sound like Neve, or SSL, or something with some character to it like the those 2 mentioned. Anyone have any suggestions?

well they are just a little too big... I am thinking closer to the size of the Toft. I'm just not sure there is one.

You didn't say new or vintage in regards to your console search, but if vintage is something you want to consider, I love my Neve 5315.... and you can find them still out there. Mine is 24 channels and is about 4 feet wide and about 30 inches deep. This is my third and last console.... I absolutely love it.

tonelux can be any size you want.

also, the toft isn't all that small. sure.. it's no sprawling console but it takes up some desk space. i don't think it's fair to compare them anyways.. the api is 10 x the cost of the toft.

Hi

Have you looked at a 12 or 16 channel 54 series Neve like a 5462 or 5465?

90dB mic gain, 40dB+ prefade headroom, 24dB+ post fade headroom, three band EQ with inductor based mids, transformers in and out, P & G faders, Sifam meters, and they sound really nice?

D&R vision and ADT-audio ToolMod

totally modular, you can build a really custom mixer to taylor your specific needs and their audio quality is up to the best out there (way beyond stuff like Toft ATB and similar prosumer mixers).

They're not cheap though, you get what you pay for.

I actually like the Toft ATB 24 quite a bit and certainly have my choice of "better" consoles (and do at times).

I'll be honest and say, if you do a your job on that board well, I'd bet MOST people here wouldn't not be able to pick it out of the same mix on the API, Tonelux, etc. Not consistently. I know. But, true.

BUUUT, to add ideas, the Neotek Elan II table top sounds like what you are describing.

Geoff, your GTM-822 mini mixer looks nice too. I know you are too modest to mention it, so I will. I love the GTQ2's I have!

Yes and no. I did modify mine, but far from "had to." The reason I did it was 100% for my own curiosity... I asked a favor of Steve from Inward Connections, who build amazing gear and is a reat guy, so he just added his two cents to the 2-buss.

That said, it says something about the build o the Toft that it can be modded like high-end consoles. In fact, find a large-format console that HASN'T been modded in some for or another... almost EVERY single vintage console has mods all over it. The moral of the story with Toft is, it can handle the same.

It's a tough comparison because there IS no comparison. The Toft kills anything "like it" and is in an unfair fight against the ones it aspires to be more like... and succeeds on most levels, the API, Tridents, etc.

Thanks so much for all the answers. I really appreciate them. I am going to have to check some of all these out.
Geoff weren't you putting together a new board somewhere? I couldn't find it.

The custom idea might be the way to go but those 54 series boards look like they might be a great solution.

I very much agree with this strategy, SO much more bang for your buck.

VERY rarely do I buy brand new, even on "new" gear. It's like buying a new car, it's worth A LOT less THE moment you drive it off the lot. I buy a 2-year older model with 30k on it and I have someone else's premium car for 50% of the price.

Really, the way to go and as Jim suggests, you're getting MUCh more for your money.

(We don't agree on the Toft, but he knows his stuff and is very right about this)

I couldn't agree more. Buying used IS the way to go. Finding the right used piece is the hard part. The good news is I'm not in a rush. Mostly I am trying to find out what is out there for a high end small format desk. The D&R stuff looks great. The Neve 54XX series looks great too. The Neotek looks good too. And the Oram. Have to do some reasearch and then try to find them to hear.

Yes, I agree... Although, the GTM is not available right now... It will be a nice option in the future for people looking for a small analog mixing solution. Especially, considering all of the optional units that have been developed.

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

Is the GTM the one that was listed in the New products thread? The one with all the nice high gloss wood? That's the other one I was wondering about. Any idea when that might be made available?

Yes, although that was not just the GTM.. It was a GTM822 master and slave unit, 2 x GTP8 units, 2 x GT4-8 EQ units, and 2 x Aux units... plus an optional fader bank and some custom furniture.

The GTM by itself looks like this:

The ETA for this entire mixing system has not been announced, but GTP8's are available now, after a lengthy backorder. I'm sure we'll see the EQ units in the next few months.

The market for a buyer of a used console right now is so ridiculously good!

I wish i were buying now, and not 3 years ago.
Good luck!
