Thread Starter | Question regarding mic pre's for drums
I need 8 channels of pre's, I currently have 4 channels of ssl pre's. I'm considering another ssl -but thats expensive considering I should be able to purchase 8 channels of a different brand for the same price or less (maybe shadow hills, ua 8110?). I wondering if its common to mix up preamp models for recording drums: i.e. use 4 channels of ssl and 4 channels of say an api? or should I stick with the same model pre for all 8 channels? -if I can get away with just 4 more preamps that would be good -but not ssl because thats another 4K. |

Take a look at the Daking or API offerings. Both are great for drums and will be much less than $4K. Mixing and matching pre's for drums is fine, people do it all the time. Use the API/Daking on spot mics and the SSL for OH's and Room or vice versa. I usually use the same mic pre for drums but than again I'm usually only using 3 mics. Sean |

I would sell your SSL's and get 8 API's.

I would say the best overall pre for drums would be the 1081. There are certain pres that are better of different parts of the kit, but 1081's always sound good.

Take a look at Shadow Hills 8 channel mic pre. You can get three different flavors on each pre! Only $3500! Very sexy looking to. Aaron |
