API 2500 make up gain effects amount of compression?

I was playing with the API 2500 compressor today and noticed that as I turn up the Output gain that it seems increase the amount of compression. It almost seems like it is more of an input gain. Is this normal or do I have it patched wrong? This is how I have it currently hooked up:
AES out of RME Raydat to input of HEDD
HEDD Analog out to input of API 2500
API 2500 out to analog input of HEDD
HED AES out to AES input of RME Raydat

I then have the RME mixer set up so that software outs 1 and 2 are turned up on the input of the HEDD (and not going to convertor outputs). And then the only thing going to the speaker outputs is the return from the HEDD (so no feedback loop).

I have the HEDD process set to A/D.

I think it is set up correctly but it sure isn't acting the way I would expect.

Hmm. I think I just finally learned what a feedback compressor is. All is good now.

You did everything correctly. When in OLD (feedback) mode the RMS detector takes its signal from the output of the VCA and (in the specific case of the 2500) after the make up gain as well. Try to switch to NEW (Feed foward) mode and the make up gain will work as you expect.

You can get some really good results playing around with the threshold and makeup gain in old mode. Great on electric guits and vox. Can hold things right where you want them.

If the sweet spot (as other people have stated on various related posts)
is around zero on the input then trying to add feedback compression on
the make up gain will surely put the output way into the red ?

On that unit you can just leave the make up on auto when in "old mode" so you don't havce to worry about it. On new mode you can go manual
