If the nail does to vocals, what the hammer does - it will be killer. I hope it has a HPF built in (though not needed for vocals). Any news on its features? |

Hey anybody... pics or details on the new comps, the Mellotron or the Dave Derr mic pre? Have a steak & scotch at the Ruth's Chris down the road for me too while you're at it. |

Not totally high-end, but there was a brand new prototype (like out of assembly as of last Friday) stereo mic from Mojave Audio. Basically the same as the MA200, but with 2 capsules and switchable patterns. The power supply had continuously variable patterns from Omni to figure 8. Top capsule rotated 180 degrees and the bottom capsule was fixed to the body. I like the capsule mount as well- the bottom capsule was mounted to the bottom of the mic and the top capsule was mounted to the top of the mic. Means that the 2 capsules were as close as possible to each other. Can't wait to try this baby... Production is still several months out, though... --Ben |

The new A Designs Compressor is called the Nail. It's a 2 channel companion piece to the Hammer. If you loved the Hammer you going to do cartwheels when you hear the Nail. IT SOUNDS AMAZING! It has got some really cool features such on it such as Direct and Comp, so that you can have an additive sound of each. (More compressed sound or more of the direct sound). IMO, it can sound as open and full as a Neve 33609, but then turn around and smash something like a Distressor. Peter brought one over to my studio 3 weeks ago for m to try out and it was AWESOME! I used it on all kinds of 2 channel material. Rock, R&B, singer songwriter stuff... it all sounded great.

When the Hammer eq came out I wrote Peter to be a sales representative here in the Netherlands. Just for a joke I made the remark what would be the next product.....a comp. perhaps ? I never got the answer from that question but am not quite surprised they developed this one. Looking at all the news there is no vid or pic to find from it. So it would be more than nice if anyone has a vieuw from it. greetz, Paul

Ronan and I spoke with the designer about the feature set a bit. The gain reduction element is diodes. The back end is the same tube circuit and is transformerless just like the Hammer, however we were told it can get a little more color than the Hammer. There is a wet/dry mix control and a variable highpass filter in the detector. There are two threshold controls. The first one which is always active is like the "peak reduction" knob on an LA2A. The second knob is a hard threshold which can be set to work in conjuction with the first threshold knob. With the hard threshold all the way up the unit supposedly acts like a peak limiter. I think it's one of those things where once you play with it for all of a minute you will understand how the two controls interract. I'm looking forward to hearing it at some point. Hello awesome compressor! Brad

Considering what some of the quality stereo mics out there run, this is actually a heck of a deal. --Ben

I'm here. I agree that it's a strange show--attendance is definitely down, but it's still a zoo. I enjoy this, to be honest--I play a lot of instruments plus I'm outfitting a new personal studio, so I'm interested in almost everything except smoke machines, and even those are pleasantly distracting! I bought Omnisphere--the demo just knocked me out, powerful yet it seems simple to get a lot out of it. I'm investing pretty heavily in Melodica technology--I'm either buying a floor model of the new Hammond 44, with a built in dynamic mic, or the Suzuki Pro 37--both sound and feel great, and I use these a lot. I also bought a floor model of the Suzuki Andes 25, the weirdest instrument of the year--it's like a Melodica but the sound is almost perfectly equivalent to a little wooden recorder. Very expressive and potentially annoying. There is a definite vibe of uncertainty in the air. Some mfrs aren't here; almost everyone's space is smaller than usual. I'd hate to be launching a new product right now unless with was such a better mousetrap as to be a no-brainer. Roland has a VPiano which I heard in action, played by Alan Pasqua. I'm sure it's going to be hugely expensive, but it sounds terrific to my ear--far beyond any stage piano I've heard. |

Also, Hammond/Leslie is introducing what i think is a truly winning idea: a small Leslie optimized for guitar and melodica players. No woofer, but two rotating speakers as is traditional. They are also working on a version for keys with a woofer. With the built in amp, around $1400. You can get it without the amp too. Oh, the Abby Road plugs sounded excellent--if I produced a lot of tock, I'd buy the bundle for the show special price of $500, about $400 off list. |

Sonic Core Scope Xite-1 system seems well thought out. Their John Bowen designed Solaris synth sounded really juicy. Danelectro "Dead On '67" guitar and baritone guitar are fine sculpted eye candy. They feel great and have some new hum reducing features. Drum a Gog had a guy surrounded by mics in a chair playing lap drums (hitting himself) triggering their samples. It freaked newbies out and made vets chuckle.Their samples sound good. JMI amps are the real deal. should be adding more US distributors very soon. Look at the US website . Some impressive bands in the lobbies of the hotels all the way thru midnight. The Cavity Searches upon exit are getting annoying and bogging down the exits...takes at least 10 minutes to get out at the end of the show day. The picture ID for entry really sucks....many vendors don't like the policy either.

Ubk's Fatso stole the show for me today. i actually dug it better than the original Fatso. despite its minimal controls, it's quite versatile; and the sound is incredibly usable - instant 'record sound' for lack of better terms. incredible job Ubk, nice to finally meet you, and looking forward to your Distressor mod as well! i posted some updates on the JoeCo 1U recorder on its own thread: http://www.gearslutz.com/board/new-p...-recorder.html Vienna Imperial looks and feels amazing in person: Damn... Vienna Imperial Digital Orchestral Piano! - Harmony Central Musician Community Forums i went to the Euphonix booth to get some help, while they seemed accomodating - but in reality useless. i may have to return my MC Mix on principal (this is in conjunction with customer support over phone prior to NAMM) got to hear the $140,000 KEF speakers. the floor was noisy but i managed to listen thu them during a quiet 10min. they're stupid clear without harshness, the bottom is a hair wooly, but still got some nice movement. midrange is smooth, but a tad bit paper-y. they're sure as hell amazing to look at: The $140,000 loudspeakers | Crave - CNET saw a few Waves presentation - Tony Maserati, JJP, etc. but it was so loud on the floor, can't hear much anyways, so i left. i've seen JJP and Eddie Kramer last year already, so no big deal (they used the same tracks anyway). kudos for my buddy @ Waves hooking me up with the badge. nothing else really 'wowed' me.. a lot of rehash from last year. downed a few beers, feeling my back hurt from standing all day, saw some old friends that i won't be able to see otherwise, and LOTS of big racks (you know the kind i'm talking about). oh the circus, oh the chaos.
