neve 8128 vs neve 5104

ok neve gurus... the details:

how interesting are the compressor/limiters in the 5104?

how interesting are the pre's in the 8128?

overall comparative covetability?

The 8108/8128 mic pre's are a mess. Lot's of ringing and different transient responses with different gain switch positions. Bellclere transformers, ya know, they "ring like a bell".

I did extensive redesign of these back around 15 years ago. Replaced the transformer with a Jensen JT-13K6. Jensen ran their Comtran optimization software for an entire week to obtain all the data necessary to redesign the circuit to retain proper loading of the transformer's secondary at all switch positions. Once done, it sounded great. Lot's of work, however.

Then it was time to replace all those POS 100 uf 4 volt coupling caps!

Next, that dumb as ass patch bay loaded with those caps and 4741 quad opamps.

Then it was on to the 32 buss mix boards in the back. If Rupert's rep was based on this turkey, his scheen may not be as brite.
