My favorite setting for it is "ON". It does some really nice stuff to the audio, but it's differenct damn near every time. FWIW it's become my "go to" vocal compressor for damn near every vocal I've done for the past while. Best of luck with it, it's a great unit.

goodness me roundbadge, your entering a whole new realm of slutiness. im so jealous as for settings, ive been bashing on with 2buss stuff mostly and finding input at 3, attack about 4, release about 5 and threshold adjusted for about 3db reduction sounding very nice across the board. its transparent yet adds real smooth compression and doesnt dull drum transients down its rapidly becoming a starting point for most 2buss stuff. sometimes lengthening the release to 6 sounds better, other times attack down to 3 sounds better....especially for hiphop things. i really like the way it goes when you drive it on but ive not as much occassion to use this with mastering work. what about you, what have you found thats been really working for you. |

Try leaving the threshold all the way up and just drive the input gain.....can make certain sources E-normous.......watch that sibilance though!

I'm glad so many of you fellow slutz are getting into the Phoenix! I've got two! (one in each control room!) Here's an interesting one for you to try in a big room tracking drums.... Set up two Royer R121s, in the farthest opposite corners of the rooms facing... this is weird... logo side towards the celing, non-logo side towards the floor. Aim to get the height equidistant from floor and celing. This works best if your kit is setup in the middle of the room. I've been using the Milennia HV3D as a pre for this but pick and mix what's good for you. patch in the Phoenix (one channel per mic) and set gain to 7ish, attack and release to 1, and the threshold low enough so that the needles are really digging in (that's where you'll need to work out what works for the track of course!) With the gain up around 7 and beyond, the phoenix ceases being quite so polite and well behaved. having the attack and release set like this also makes it dirtier... Hard pan these mics and introduce some of them into the rest of your drum mic mix and check it out! Huuuge sound!! enjoy... Jason |

Yeah..I'm realizing the possibillities... It does add girth to a lotta stuff and working the gain with the thresh all the way up or slighty digging the meters sounds real cool.. but the drum Buss...F*ck yeah! Slammin but with size! Seriously Yum! I REALLY wanna keep it..But then Pete at Shadow Hills is making an uber comp thats just days away from a demo at Vintage King..I wanna put these two side by side and let em' rip. Sh*t ..I'll probably want both..$$ Did I mention I have some Helios for sale?$$$ |

i definately agree. i ran one up against the manley vari-mu and the pendulum es-8 and it won out for 2buss work. im using it in my mastering house. if you search back you will find the review if your interested though if you've used i guess you already know what it can do |

That compressor is going to be absolutely insane looking from what I can gather from the drawings of it. Have you had a chance to check out the Shadow Hills pre yet ??? I love how their gear seems to be really multifunctional with different pre sounds and different compressors in the same box but he still finds enough room on the things to keep the cool knobs and retro vibe. That compressor is jam packed !
