I tend to find that when I really like a song, it's hard for me to judge the engineering part because the song makes me like the sound usually. Or it's too much of a diversion maybe. Not to imply that I don't like the sounds don't eh record, I love them. But I find sometimes I will love the sound of a record and years later listen to it and hate it only to realize I liked the song so much I couldn't pay enough attention to notice the engineering.

So I like it.

My Recordings/Credits

Cool drum sounds, several cool songs, but the piano sound is pretty awful. It's so integral to her artistry, and I might be able to buy the stylized piano in the pop hit, but geez, there's not a nice, natural piano sound anywhere on the record.

The other thing that bugged me was how over-produced "fairy tale" was. There's a version that's just Sara playing piano and singing that eats the album version for lunch (you can find a music video for it on youtube). When you have a great artist, remember to get out of the way; feature her, and her piano.

Still, criticisms aside, it's a nice record from a talented artist. On the whole, I think it was successful. I bought it, so that's saying something! Now I need to get a copy of the stripped-down version of Fairy Tale.

I had a similar experience with Rage against the machine. Listened to that stuff again awhile back and I thought " Wow this sounds wierd"

Good but wierd, just different than I remember from when I was intimate with those songs.

Love it!

I love the drum sound! And I love the way Matt Chamberlain plays drums! Anyone know what drums he used on this album?...

I really like the songs, the way she sings and her voice too. Yes, the piano sounds like it's either real acoustic piano, really processed or it's just a good digital piano (probably also really processed), but I loved that it felt like the piano jumped out of the speakers and smacked me in the face the first time I heard Love song (and it still does). Of course, I also like the way it was played, and the fact that I really like the song doesn't make it worse.

Back to the drum sound. I really like that the drums probably sounded warm, but kind of trashy, before mix, and then got "In your face'd" quite a bit in the mix (please correct me if I'm wrong). Vintage gear+hand hammered cymbals+heavy smashing in the mix = I like!

The whole album sounds acoustic, but modern to me, and I like the way it makes me feel.

For the record, I also like to listen to Gaucho or Aja, and (but?) I also think Womanizer is a great song.

my 2 cents

Jon

do you have an idea what drumset he uses, and the mics pres, compressors etc involved? I know that equipment doesn't make it up alone, but how to use it is what counts...in fact I think that utilization of room mics play a BIG BIG part in that drum sound....he has a combination of several room mics....according to a mix review

That is such a huge part of it! Matt Chamberlain always sounds like Matt Chamberlain.

He only plays on about 2/3 of the record and the other drummer (know guy the name is slipping my mind) also sounds great on the record.

I'd love for her next record to have a few less of the "this is how modern records are made so it how we have to make this record that way" about it.

there's way too much limiting on that record for me to like the way the drums sound. they have no transients, it's all splat and every other sound in the mix is equally far forward.

it's such a weird thing... when it's quiet i feel like i can't hear the drums even though there's ample volume. so i turn it up, and the more i do the less i'm able to hear. everything sounds tremendously processed, edgy, aggro.

i wonder if this trend really will ever recede. even a little would be very welcome over here.

Beautiful songs/ arrangement, inspired musicians..really excited about the music but just one problem..

I get a severe headache after listening to a few minutes of that record. Tried many times to grit my teeth and tune out the 'crunch' of the sound. Just too overcompressed..what a spectacular waste.

Saw her on kid kraddick show on youtube and that lady is seriously talented and had so much of feeling and mojo that it made my hair stand for a few hours after.

What a waste....
