Arsenal R24 Review !

Just got a bunch of gear and thought I'd get a R24 because some people here seems to like it, it's cheap, and I'm a slutz.

One word: WOW !! For the price I don't think you can beat it... This thing sounds very very good. What a surprise !! Without a doubt, my best purchase this year at any price. It reminds me a bit of a SSL 4000 sound but with a bigger bottom end and sweet sweet Highs !! Nice and Musical !!

When reading the previous reviews, I got the impression it was more of a nothing special bread and butter EQ but it's much more than that !

The design itself is not perfect but man, it sure sounds great !!

Right now, I prefer it to my 550Bs (I have 11 of them, I may or may not sell some....).

In my world, for the price, it's a no brainer. Do yourself a favor and try one.

Seriously, I'm amazed !

Good to hear. I've got an R24 that should arrive in a couple days. I do wish you could switch the low/hi bands to shelving, and that it had LP/HP filters......but, for the price you can hardly argue.

Got one as well! Very Nice EQ, but to be honest i much prefer my 550b's.
And for that matter would happily swap my r24 for a pair!

i have a pair of the V14s and love-em!
they are not a 550, but that is not the design, they are ( IMHO ), a very nice great all purpose EQ.

You're making me feel good about my purchase! That's exactly what I need. Just a good, solid EQ that will work for more sources than not. I'm kind of hoping it will be like the distressor of EQ's. Works on almost anything, but maybe not THE best for a specific task.

I'm pretty sure it will sound great on everything I'll throw at it.

As I said, to my ears, it sounds better than an all purpose EQ. I really wouldn't mind having 10 of them !

i would love ten of them!
or more! : )~
i did not mean to imply, or lesson ( spelling ? ), to any degree it's place, when stating, a very nice great all purpose EQ, but instead to imply, that by its nature and sound sculpting quality, it will work for just about anything you want to through at it.
i love the V14s!

I love my R-24...it is quite nice EQ. Not smeary or whatever. Useful. Haven't pushed it past a boost or cut of "3" yet in practical use though.

I found that the more you push it the better it sounds.

So far GTRs and Drums ! I think it will really sound good on anything because it's so flexible and musical. Anybody interested should really TRY it. Personally, I would take it over a pair of 550Bs anyday. I mean, it's good to have both because they have a very different flavour but as I said before, for the price, I can't think of anything that good.

Can you elaborate ?? I find the top of the 550s to be hard and harsh compared to the R24 + the 2dB step is a bit of a pain sometimes...

I agree about the 2db step, but you can always push it 4db and take the resolution down a bit if you want to get in between 2 and 4, correct? Although, the rest of your fq's get all messed up.....I pretty much use my 5500 on the 2buss, so it makes recall a bit easier when they are stepped, but I totally see where you are coming from.

Hello Mr. Postman!

1 Arsenal Audio R24.........check
1 API 2500.........check

Can't wait to try out this R24. The build seems solid and there's a perfect amount of resistance on the knobs. The only problem I've got now, is which pieces of gear to pull out of the rack to fit this in!

Obviously stoked about the 2500, but it's just a loner until my TK-Audio BC1 arrives. I'm planning on mixing a few songs in particular while it's here though. Mainly the more "rockin" ones.

Thanks again ADAM!

OK.....I'll take 4 please!

I spent roughly 3 hours today with both the Arsenal R24 and the API 2500. The R24 is really nice....I mean.....REALLY nice! If you consider the price point, I might go as far as calling it amazing. I would not mind at ALL if I had a console with these EQ's in the channels. I didn't try it on tons of stuff, but it just always worked. Now, I'm sure that there might be a better EQ for a particular job.....if you had every EQ ever made. But for a solid, no frills, works more often than not EQ, this is it.

I'm pretty stoked ADAM and and a few others on here swayed me away from an SSL EQ. I still want one, don't get me wrong, but I think this was a much better choice for someone that doesn't already have a solid "channel" EQ they really like using. I'll have no problem going from Kick to Snare to Vocals to Guitars with this thing.

I could go on about the 2500 here, but I think I'll go dig up an old thread on that unit and bump it instead.

Glad you like it !! It's very easy to over cut or boost with this EQ because it sounds so good. BTW, it sounds very different from the SSL. I love the 4000 EQs and Comps but not on everything. So far, the R24 sounded GREAT on everything I threw at it.

For the 2500, be patient with it. It took me a while to learn how it works. And make sure to use the gain on it !! That's half the sound of this box !

I've logged some hours on SSL 4K's. Alot actually in the past 2 years. I too LOVE those EQ's. However, I've never actually fully mixed on an SSL. Except for ONE time on a 9K when I was in L.A. when I barely knew what I was doing. Therefore I've never gotten too deep with them. However, from what my ears tell me so far, with the somewhat decent memory I have, I 100% agree with you on the SSL 4K EQ's vs. R24.

And, regarding the 2500. Yes...!!! That output gain is pretty magical.

Anyone have any pictures of the guts of any arsenal eq?

I'm considering one, I'd love too see what's going on under the hood.
