Thread Starter | best vocal mics for...
i am trying to find the best mics to be paired with an avalon m5 and an avalon 737 for male vocals. i am looking for 2 mics with a total budget of $3500. i have a baby bottle and an NTK and neither one of them are giving me the sound i want with the preamps i am using. the baby bottle has a nice mid presence but sounds thin. the ntk sounds closer to what i am looking for except it seems to have a sizzling quality that i can't get rid of without serious processing. i am now ready to acquire some higher end mics and need some help to narrow my choices... i will be happy if i can get 2 sonic signatures out of these combos... one clean and articulate and one warm and airy... thanks in advance!!! |

MadGuitrst has a soundelux u195 for sale at a reasonable price, here is the link http://gearslutz.com/board/showthread.php3?t=34400 i think is a very versatile mic an would recommend it for anyones mic locker. i have one and if i had the extra cash i would get it myself. i believe he also has a rode k-2 i know nothing of this mic other-then the general advertisement hype, maybe someone can shed some light on it. i mention the soundelux because i believe it to be a very solid mic and a fellow slutz has one at a bargain!

I'll make my pubic appeal once again. For all you guys out there that record vocals and have a couple of modern LDC mics and aren't happy with the sound. As this guys says so perfectly....if you're trying to get rid of that sizzling quality that i can't get rid of without serious processing. Do yourself a favor and run to your local dealer, type as fast as you can...get a Shure SM7, Beyer M88 or EVRE20...in that order. Thank me later. What was your budget here? $3500! Are you kidding me? Each of the above mics will run you about $300 ea. So, take the additional $2500 and put it in the bank or something. later, m |

Check out the FEILO/SE/NTEC N5600 multi-pattern tube microphone or the N5500 Cardiod tube microphone. No NTK harshness, very warm, yet incredible extended smooth high end. The N5500 is about $595 from us tested and burn in for 12-18 hours the N5600 is $795. We just put one up against a M-149 was was very impressed. These use a standard 12AX7 tube and if you are recording screaming punk vocals you can install a 6072 and drop the gain by a few db. The 5500 and 5600 have very large high quality shielded output transformers. These are Z5500/Z5600 as a FEILO or SE or N5500/N5600 as a NTEC. NTEC is brought in to North America by Gotham Audio which will give you some idea of the quality of these microphones. Cheers, Dave Thomas (Advanced Audio) |

just to add to the confusion, my first thought was that you might be happier with a different pre, like a chandler or great river. i don't think it's possible for either of those pre's to sound sizzly. imo the pre is as responsible as the mic for the tone of your recording, and with a smoother pre *everything* you record will sound better, not just your vocals. gregoire del ubik | |

I second the dynamic mic suggestion. SM7 is great. |
