from the samples of your vocals i've heard online i REALLY think you should try the 176. they are so different you'd really want both in the rack of course. call up VK for a demo.

| Do you also have access to a CL1B? Anyhow, if you would be so kind as to download some files from my thread on tubes making a huge difference in the sound of the CL1B. Different Tubes In A Tube Tech CL1B You could then run the clean sample thru your 176 and voila! Then you could kindly post the file, so I can hear it too :-) Cheers, |

| Retro 176
From what I've heard of you and what I know of my Retro 176... that thing is made or you! Vibe for days versus a solid compressor, but not much atmosphere compared to the Retro 176. Just one guy's opinion. (Enjoy the 176, I believe you will. Excited for you -Andrews |

| I have em. they're different enough to where its cool having both the 176 is pretty vibey.the CL1b is on the transparent side w/ a bit of warmth that said the 176 is always the first thing i try on tracking vox,it just sounds great. |

I think that CL1B deserves its position as modern classic and almost must have comp, but for advanced engineer or hobbist definitelly not the only one choice. I use it pretty extensivelly (and I like clean compression for most jobs), but for dirtier tasks except obvious LA2A/3A & 1176, I've found mpressor to be great, versatile and almost indispensable tool (although non-tube).

Started running some vocals through it. Sounds great, I would not say that it blows the CL1B away by any means. I think they're both cool. I think the 176 suits my voice maybe a hair more but not by much. The 176 sounds maybe a hair more masculine and dark. ![]()

Could that be because of different tubes? You should be able to see a bit of a difference in the way they compress too, I guess. My question is if you think it is diferent enough to justify having both. I think mullard tubes give the TT some hair and muscles, for instance - if you are into that. Check my thread :-) Cheers, |

aaauuuggggghhhh..... They're both nice. The 176 is easier for me to use, I love the output knob. |

It doesn't help that I'm having one of the hardest sessions of my life. Female singer clipping everything. Standing a mile off the sm7 with the pre on 1. FUKKKKKKKK I'm in hell! |

Wow, she must be hitting like 150dB of SPL or something....?! Clipping any preamp with a distant mic'd SM7B would be tough. War |

Just did some singing and ran some vocals through both. IMO The 176 is better, it's deeper, more balanced, takes being hit hard better. The tone is fatsville! The CL1B does have a happier sound, maybe a but more commercial. Both are good imo. |

It seems the achilles heel of the CL1B is you can't really hit it as hard as the 176. It just gets to grimey.
