Thread Starter | silent BM15a's???
it's kind of driving me crazy, and i've done tons of research, but can anyone else using the bm15a's help me. only AC plugged in (no xlr) what do you hear? (listening closely) nothing at all? buzz? hum? radio? white noise? i get a low buzz that sounds like a ground problem. do my monitors have a problem with them? any help is greatly appreciated. |

my BM15As aren't up right now as i'm trying to sell them, but no, i don't recall hearing any particular buzzing. if your grounding is correct you should just hear hiss (amp noise) the more you raise the volume, but no buzzing or humming. |

Is there something plugged into them? I used to get this buzz if I turned off the power to my BigKnob by accident. I would get a ground type buzz, but once I turned on the big knob (which was obviously plugged into the BM15a's) the noise went away and all is well. Jeff |

If the inputs aren't terminated (nothing is plugged in) it's quite possible you'll be hearing more noise than when they are terminated.

I bought the passive BM15s for exactly this sort of reason. Power transformers hum acoustically - so why would you want them inside the resonant chamber of your near-field monitors? If AC was a perfect sinewave, it wouldn't be much of an issue. But AC gets bent out of shape, and harmonics get added. Do you notice this noise varies during the day/night? In addition to this basic feature - I find good amps are expense, and the amps you get in powered speakers are not expensive - ergo, powered speakers don't have good amps. In my experience, this not-goodness manifests itself as hiss & hum and other vices. I drove myself crazy trying to find an amp that didn't have any detectable hum in both channels. Some of the most expensive amps sucked more than some cheaper amps. All of them were too loud acoustically (either the transformer or the fans), so my Lab Gruppen has to stay outside. My 2 cents.

With all respect this is plain bullshit to say.I just cranked my 3 front BM-15A to max. Yes, a little bit of sus is coming out, when you stay directly in front of them. “Power transformers hum acoustically”?? Not in mine, not ever in another sets I have worked with in different rooms. Inbuilt power amps are just fine, if not a little insufficient in power. If gear in this class does what you & spaceman_west are describing, just take them to service instead of making full of you self. My 2 cents.
