Thread Starter | Advise on adc :lavry da10, burl audio, benchmark adc1
Hi !
i am thinking to get a great ADC my option are Lavry AD 10,Benchmark ADC1, Burl Audio.....and maybe the Universal Audio 2192,
I will be using to pass mix mix thru and go back to PT.
I am using Aurora 16 but I wonder if any of those choice could improve the clarity and punch.

If money's no object - go for the Burl...I wouldn't leave out the API A2D either...especially if you are looking for "punch".

I wonder how good are the Color options on the Lavry?
and if the Burl and maybe HEDD can give me a 3K improvement for my mixes.

I don't think the Lavry's are known for their color. The Burl, at least from what I've read here, is the real deal - some folks I respect greatly on this forum A/B'd with the 2192, Lavry, Apogee and others and the Burl came out on top. It's pricey for a 2 channels - no DA.
Personally, I went with the 2192 - great value with 2 AD/DA, class A tubed up, sounds great. I seriously considered the Burl - but no one had them in stock - and didn't expect them for months (not sure what the status is these days...).

The Lavry AD10 is the A/D converter... the DA10 is the D/A.
With that said, I own both and they are great. Very clean and transparent. |

Seriously, no piece of gear will make that much of a difference, unless it's from a soundblaster card to a Burl B2. All the good stuff just adds 10% or so.
the Burl is great - very alive and real sounding. Can make you forget it's digital. the AD10 is very clear and precise, but you still know it's digital.

I've been a proud owner of the Lavry AD10 (& DA10) for 2 weeks. I'm finishing off a big mix tonight (acoustic music). I think I'll try the different color options. Snippets anyone?
Frankly, I've been so happy with the "clear" mode, that I haven't printed anything in any of the color modes yet. Most of my "color" is coming from my board and outboard (Altec, TL, & UREI).

If the Burl was $2K I would drop the money right now...that extra $1K+ is the tough part...

The Lynx Aurora A/D is no real slouch. You will get more width and front to back with a better converter, no doubt. I had the Burl at my house, LOVED it but it was too colored for my tastes. I would definitely not want all of my mixes running through that thing. You'd almost have to mix through it as it will definitely change the sound of your mix.
The Hedd is awesome, as you get really great D/A. I ended my search with the Fred Forssell discrete A/D. Set for life.

Fred is building them one at a time, but I don't think hes quite ready to go full blown on production just yet. Its very minimal, just spdif/aes outs, 1 wc out and a clip meter. No full metering/lightpipe out, etc. It does go from 44.1-192. Anyway, if you are interested, just contact Fred through his website.
