Tlm 193

I've hard they're good but produce a dark sound. What do people mean by that?

I've used one for years. I'm not sure it's dark as much as it's not crazy bright like a lot of modern LDC's. Like the TLM 103. It's pretty good on female vocals, trumpet, and as a room mic.

Tlm93

I would not call is dark. But its not Hyped like a U87.
Usefull Cardiod Condensor for general recording applications. = Works well as a Acoustic Guitar Mic. Also very nice for Alto and Tenor Saxophone.
You can find them cheap on Ebay. - I found a matched pair for a song.

It's great on marshall cabs playing metal, but you'll need to boost 4 and 8k.

Nice underappreciated mic - sound is similar to the TLM170 (same capsule IIRC), not bright, but a nice natural sound with a bit of warmth and a nice open top end. Definitely not a 'hyped' sound.

A TLM 193...Its kind of a ribbonish condenser. Great sounding mic that works well on things that would rather not be hyped on the high end...like a trumpet.

As with ribbons there is a renewed interest in the TLM193 in the digital age.

The TLM193 has a flatter frequency response than most popular microphones these days... I own a pair and love them for a lot of things, from good acoustic guitars to pianos or overheads. It's a really cool mic, but not one I find myself using a lot on vocals (which I'm sure is just a question of the kind of vocalists that I've been working with lately).

I've never looked into or heard much about the TLM193, but wow, these descriptors make it sound like exactly what I look for in a condenser. I'm going to have to check one out; glad for the tip from this thread!

Well since most condenser mics this days sounds in my opinion really bright ,you might consider tlm 193 a dark sounding mic . For me its just right sounding mic .

Its a budget version of the tlm 170 and it has only cardioid pattern .
On some sources it sounds similar to the tlm 170 but definitely not a same mics just very similar on some sources when both in cardioid .

On vocals is definitely not same as tlm 170.

I seem to recall that its the TLM170 Capsule with the electronics of the KM184.

I would go so far as to say the TLM193 has a touch of silk on the top end, good presence but smooth. Excellent vocal mic and treats sibilance nicely on most singers, probably the best all rounder in that price range from Neumann for voice anyhow. On most acoustic sources I would grab the TLM49 in that price range.

The TLM170 uses the K89 capsule which was originally developed for and used in the U89.

The TLM103 is similar in size and shape to a U89. Electronically, there is little to no similarity.

This thread is about the TLM 193, not the TLM 103. Yes it has the same capsule K89 like the U89 and the TLM 170. I read serveral testimonies saying that the TLM 193 is very close to the TLM 170 and U89 in cardio.
