Thread Starter | difference beetween NEVE VR and VX ?
Hi Can someone describe me the difference ,in sound, between the Neve VR ,VR legend and VX ? I have a VR60 with the master card of a Legend. The VR sometimes lack of "power" in certain situation ,and I would like to know if that is different with the VRlegend or VX . I like the "musicality" off the desk, but sometimes would like to get more "punch" out of it ! Is the VX the solution ? The 88R seems to be out of reach......360'000 pounds sterling for 48 channels.... a BIT TOO MUCH !!!! Thanks for the advices !! |

The VR,VX series is not known for its punchy character. It has a low mid bump through out it. Most of the time when mixing on it you are fighting EQing the low mid bump out. That doesn't mean with the right outboard compression and outboard EQ you couldn't get a punchy sound. If i had a VR i would do the Musgrave upgrade. Especially the center section. A Musgrave modded VR and a VX are very sonically comparable. An 88R is a different animal altogether. Different design team and sonic signature. By the way you might look at recapping your VR. It will tighten up the sound tremendously.

Thanks Thrill, You are 100 % right about the bump in the low mid.... I am using nearly 80% eq'ing and compressing OUTSIDE de board. The vx is more "open" right ? Because I will change board I would like to upgrade sonically without paying too much money (I am using a VR (that is not mine) and I don't think I want to go back to SSL. (even if the maintenance is "way" easier).I really prefer the musicality of the Neves. Not really into the 9000J or K....a bit "clinical"... Any other suggestion ? |

Well i like SSL's so they are fine for what i do. Its laid out in a way that my brain can interlock with it during the mixing process. You still need outboard to compliment it, but once in a while you can get away with what's on board. I've mixed on VR's alot and a VX a couple of times. I like VR and VX's for dance music. Also they can work great for some R&B. I think its a great pop/r&B producers board for an inhouse production house. You just have to get used to the sound and its layout. If you consider them musical sounding, than anything else will be a dissapointment. With that you may still want to look at an API. But if fully parametric EQ's is part of your sound, you will feel handcuffed working on it. I am not really sure what kind of music you are doing.

Are you doing most of it yourself or do you have freelance engineers coming through? This also should play a little into your next decision. I haven't seen many used VX's around. Its similar to the reason you don't see a special edition SSL G+ for sale.

I believe the special edition has alot of the Bob Clearmountain mods. Also it has a different color than the ugly G's. Also some G+ are E's or G's wit G+ automation. If you dig the sound of the VR so much, you may not get the SSL sound.
