Engineer Documents

I've been wondering what forms or documents recording engineers that are freelance based fill out each session to get paid by their clients. Is it just a simple session invoice or work order? If some one with experience with this could please explain the process of getting paid by clients... Also, any example forms would be great!

Many thanks

Are you a business owner or an independent contractor?

I send invoices each first day of the month or the day after the project is finished. Of course the client and I both want to know the price, so beforehand we both a aware of that in the form of a written agreement. In case of a large project and depending on the client (private person or company) a part (50%) of the costs a paid beforehand or half-way.

Don't forget the tax portion. Mmm taxes. dfegad taxes

If you are making over $600 in a year from one client then you usually fill out a W-9 form so they can send you a 1099 at the end of the year.

Since your are independent, your client doesn't take taxes out of what they pay you. The 1099 tells the IRS that you were paid a certain amount and you need to pay taxes on that amount.
