the Lil Freq is a great tool

Hey, just wanted to sing the praises of this box. I got one a few weeks ago and have used it on every session since. If you've got a "problem" track that was recorded poorly or won't sit right in the mix, the Freq is amazing at surgical eq. You can go nuts and re-shape the sound without losing the essence of the original AND without getting ugly phase shift. Yes, the De-essers are fantastic- and I also have found them useful for removing that "hey, there's TOO MUCH detail in that digitally recorded acoustic....") It does not have the inherently colored sound of the other Empirical gear. this one is super clean.

the lo/hi shelf and the lo-cut have a very different sound than the eq sections, so they are really useful.

The DI has been great for tracking synths. Haven't tried anything else yet.

I've got a ton of great eq options but this one fills a niche that I was missing. I "thought" I had it covered, but once I tried it, I found that it did things my other boxes couldn't.

Anyway, congrats to Empirical for a great box.

just my .02-----I don't sell them!

Congrats on the Upgrade! We find the Empirical Stuff so amazing for problem solving, we have TWO LilFREQ's RIGHT smack dab in the mix position. I've also found similar results with the DerrEsser, as it really is undetectable when you set it correctly. We have 4 in our frame sometimes, two for overheads if needed, or TWO for vocals, or we'll use that fourth unit for cool effects with the LISTEN button ON, sending into the S/C of another compressor, or even a box like Transient Designer, with more attack and less release patched into a delay, blending with the original. Its a SICK piano/vocal ghosting effect!

This is the one piece of gear that's been out for years that I still have yet to try out. I've heard great things about it too. I just haven't gotten my hands on one. That's a good goal for the week; Find one and try it. Anyone got one in Nashville?

unfortunately I only own one mono unit, but a friend of mine that has two loves using it on the two buss. He uses some other EQs for the vibey stuff and uses the LilFreq for surgical trouble shooting.

I'm amazed that the Lil' FrEQ doesn't get more use in the VO world (I can understand the use of plug-ins and DAW apps due to their speed, but this thing is just damn impressive).

I've got two in the home studio and wouldn't trade them for anything.

When you say that, are you referring to the eq portion, the de-esser portion, or both?
I found the eq portion to be very neutral as opposed to sweet. I would say that about the de-esser/DS seciton though.
Regards.

The eq is very surgical and exacting, but for the most part I'm referring to the de-esser/DS section.

the lil freq is amazing for cleaning stuff up before squashing the pants off of it. follow up with a more vibey eq post-compression and it's all smiles.

When I tweek vocals with it I just close my eyes and find the exact freqs in seconds, this eq is really amazing. I also love it on bass for getting upper mids and cutting the mid lows. Thinking of taking 2 more in my rack.

yeah, that's one of the very musical aspects of it- that you can really *hear* the difference between 220 and 250. It's a very articulate tool. My ADAMs are the same way for mixing. Don't watch the knobs and sweep it until it sounds right. For some reason, on this box it's usually fast and easy.

Freq ftw

Ive got 2 lil'freqs, and heaps of other EQs from SSL, Api, Manley etc. I use the freqs almost all the time and I have to say, hands down, they are the best EQs Ive ever touched. They sound beautiful on everything, and are so convenient in terms of use and control; its got every tool you'll ever need in terms of EQing in one box! For vocals, synths, pianos, guitars, you name it. So accurate, colorful and versatile. How can you go wrong? And from the creators of the Distressor! Gods they are! Price is steep, but worth it. Im glad youve joined the freaks.

Regards,
