trident s100 for summing?

Hi peeps,

Gonna be buyig a summing box very soon indeed (probably 2Bus) but have been made aware of the Trident s100 8ch mixer. These can be linked together if one needs more outputs.

Does anyone have any experience with these? They got a reasonable enough review
from proreview but it would be nice to hear some comments from everyday users.

I'm thinking the advantages over 2bus would be : 1 Headphone output!
: 2 eq if needed

But obviously if they sound like pants its a no-go!!!

Cheers!

Hi!
I bought the S100 a year ago. The pres were so terrible that I sold it before I could try the summing. Like a Hicut above 10K. I also have an Oram Octasonic 8 channel pre which sounds great, so it could be that there was something wrong with my unit.

No, it wasn't just your unit. I got mine brand new, and the knobs kept falling out all the time and the pres were incredibly noisy. I really liked the sweet hi shelving Eq, nothing else. I was very disapointed with Trident's quality control.
I sold mine too.

I think they sound great, the one I own doesnt sound noisy at all. The pres sound great on acoustic drums, and on my mpc (nice and round).. I have not really use it much as a summing buss.

Old Trident stuff is good to great, I wouldn't touch any of the newer Oram made gear with a 10-meter cattle-prod for a bunch of reasons. If your looking at summing boxes there are much cooler and better sounding options out there.

All you need to make a record is a mic, some tape and maybe some bad reverb...

Why?

...curious. I had been looking at the Octasonic awhile ago.

Maybe because his business practices are questionable perhaps? Personally I think the guy is shady and I would never buy anything form him but others here like his stuff so more power to them.

Like I have mentioned earlier. The Octasonic is a good sounding well built (YES! well built) preamp. It's neutral and fast, so quite cool for drums. It has not got the colour of my APIs, but it's versatile and useful. The official price is a little too high, but I think Oram never asks for these prices. There are always some deals at Oram and Trident. Checkit out!

By the way. Where is Mike Scott? Wasn't he the official Oram defender on planet earth?

Interesting. I'd never heard anything before on that matter... although I do have to say that when I came across the <b>"Father" moniker</b> on his website it did seem to me to be somewhat, self serving. Actually, kind of annoying.

With that said, when I emailed him (not expecting to get a response) he got back to me within a few hours and offered a pretty big discount on the gear I was inquiring about. (Even with the discount however I felt the prices were pretty high lol.) Anyway, he seemed like a nice enough guy in the email. A salesman definitely. But, nice guy.

Cool. You may like the gear, some do. I find his pres and EQ to be boring but serviceable. For the money I think there are other products that I would turn to but that is just me (I don't want to start a flame war)...

YMMV for sure.

What does make a Eq boring?

Very little vibe. It cuts, it boosts it does not destroy the sound but it does not impart any texture like an API or Neve and it is not extremely surgical or clean either.

It does have something going on with the high end, kind of.... soft in the 9 - 12k region that I am not really fond of but other than that it is just serviceable. That is about the best word I could use.

I would find it unlikely that I would use it as my first choice for anything ever and I doubt it would use it as my 3rd or 4th given the option but if it were the only EQ available then I could live with it.

Again, to my ears boring but YMMV.....
