I had this little fantasy about a 3 mic setup for my drums;

One FLEA C-12 overhead and one C-12 as side/OH mic.

One FLEA 47 a few feets in front of the kit.

On a old Gretsch in huge sizes, and sometimes a small Ayotte kit.

I know the C 12's will work nice as overheads, but I have never tried a U 47 as a room mic on drums... used it on vocals with fantastic results. Belive it or not...

The question is; Will a U 47 handle a bass drum, mic far away of course... And will it capture a huge fat, round and deep sounding 24x14" kick, played very gentle?

Maybe the C-12 is a better option here as well....

You can even put a U47 close on a loud bass drum, not being played softly.

Don't you know that looking good is the most important thing when it comes to sound? C'mon J.J., you should know by now!

And if you ask me...a U47 on a kick drum is a waste of a U47 (even though it can sound pretty awesome!). You can find a better spot to put it, I promise.

Ok, will it pick up the kick in a nice way?

Waste!? Where would you put it. And would you throw away the C-12 overheads and use it there?

Getting back to the Flea mics for a minute... I got the OK to review the M49 and U47 Flea mic and wrote Jonathan Little about them. I'm going to shoot them out between 6 original M49's and 3 all original U47's. Jonathan said he would be interested in a comparison as well. He is suppose to get back to me and let me know when they will hit the states... Sounded like even though Little Labs in the US distributer, that they've not had any come in yet, at least not through Little Labs.

I'll try and keep everyone posted.

FYI Flea is the provider of the mechanical kits for most of the cloners (U47,C12 and M49) .

They also have very nice original mics .

Will do, Jonathan is still looking into it. He said even though he is the contact person in the US he has not had one come in yet...

Finally U47, C-12 and similars for crisis timesthumbsup

Although I have excellent and expensive mic locker I wouldn't be against idea to add several of them (eventually even to sell expensive ones).
Affordable high-end, who would be against that except snobs?
Hopefully analogue consoles, monitors, compressors and EQs will follow

My first acoustic guitar recording ever: Your U47 into the Neve pre & LA-2A with that nice Loef handmade guitar... that kinda sets the bar high for my future recordings

I use FLEA 49 here. It is a very good mic.

As for reviews, I have already done them here and in other forums. (Lynn's and Klaus's).
Thing is a mudderdugger with excellent and real M49 sound. It has the essential soft and flattering pick-up with also the accurate M49 freq. response. Tonal character is as the real 49. I do also have good examples of Neumann 49's and 50's here with which to compare the FLEA.

FLEA is totally for real. I await the chance to try a FLEA 47 some time.

And yet I've still not gotten any from Jonathan for review (both for Tape-Op and myself). I think they might "sell" more in the "states" if they got a few over here to be passed around and reviewed.
