Variable Sample rate clock as a varispeed control in DAW?

I hope this is the place to post this...

Is this as simple as it seems? Can you just manually vary the sample
rate of a master clock and get, in effect, a varispeed control for a
multitrack DAW? Certainly playing back a 96k recording at 88.2k slows
and lowers the pitch (approx. a whole-step) so it should be that
simple. Are there issues of additional jitter or other sorts of
distortion of the clock signal? Finally, does anyone make a clock with
manually variable sample rate?

TIA

Yes, this is possible. I know RME cards do this and Lynx pretty sure as well. Probably others too, but can't say for sure.

I actually use a pretty extensive RME rig and since I clock it with the first ADI-8ds the only choice I have is a 44.1/48k button. I'll look through the Digiface documentation to see what I can do with that as the master.

Here's the info about RME's 'SteadyClock': http://www.rme-audio.com/english/tec...teadyclock.htm

Seems it's only available in recent models: ADI-648, HDSP 9632, HDSP MADI, ADI-2, ADI-4 DD and Fireface 800

I went looking and I'll post a Q in the RME forum but it looks like the new clock is still only selctable between the old favorites. Thanks though...

Anybody else?

hi poolhouse,

Are you using a Hammerfall card with a 9-pin ADAT sync in port? If so, you might pick up an Alesis BRC on ebay and control its bnc word-clock-in with your RME ADI DS's clock-out and the sound card with the BRC's ADAT 9-pin sync. The BRC re-clocks through a PLL and lets you vary the clock speed coming out of it.

Will it work for you? I don't know. It would for me, but I have CreamWare Scope and Pulsar cards that have analog outs as well as ADAT outs, so if my RME AEs choked on the weird speeds, I could always fall back on analog ins and outs. Be aware, the BRC is old technology, and won't work above 50k.

I vari-speed my setup (RME 9652 and Apogee AD/DA-16-X's) with the Apogee Big Ben.

Before that I used a Sony professional CD player with vari speed and synced the rig from the AES/EBU output. Of course the quality of the Apogee is much much better.
