Who can tell me about the Harrison HM-4 console?

Hey guys, I have a local opportunity at a Harrison HM-4 console for $3,500. Needs a good cleaning tho. I can't seem to find a lot of info. on it. It's 40 channels, 8 bus, built 1984 and a beast. Anyone? Thx.

Also, seller just mentioned it had a slight hum when fired up recently. Power supply issue or ground loop issue, I hope the latter.

What do you want to know?

I've used one about a dozen times.

My advice is that you'll need lots of $$$$ to make it useful and reliable. But it can sound good when it's working well.

That's kinda what I wanted to know. How much $ I would have to put into it to get it cleaned and operating properly.

The hum when running...what do you think on that?

Also, I think this was used for live sound. How would that affect routing options in the studio?

Thanks for your help.

Hi. I'm guessing that the $3.5k starting price is peanuts in comparison to getting this back to spec.

Hum.... bad. Could be easy, could be eternally frustrating.

Personally, I wouldn't touch it, unless you want to learn about the desk, learn how to do your own repairs, and have a hobby for the next five years until you sell it.

Just imho.

...never used them...

but I´ve heard from tech´s that there are some groundloops in the design that needs mods.

3500 is not much.......but if the sellers say it´s in bad condition, I would not buy it if I could not do the work on it myself. I restored the SSL4K in our studio, wich did not cost us much to buy. But if we should have paid a tech for all the hours work that I put down, it would have become realy expencive...

....and of coarse....you have to have the time to do it.......

Hello! Sorry i might be a little late on this thread but i have a Harrison SM-5 Console. Its kinda like the HM-5. Same EQ and some other stuff. Its a GREAT console!!! Probably one of the best Pres i have ever heard on a large format mixer. The EQ is very "airy" and "open" so don't think its going to add alot of character to the sound but it is a very useful EQ. It can handle big bell type boasting all the way to sharp Q "surgical" type work. Very Quiet. Just a awesome fun console to use. However, I would have it cleaned and re-capped as it might loose some of its luster without this.

I am actually selling mine due to the fact that its too big and my new house is too small to fit it. Yes, I actually used my SM-5 to do recording mixdowns. This is something i wouldn't even think about doing if it was a cheaper FOH or Stage Monitor mixing console.

This is an A range console (to my knowledge) Just fix it up and I promise you will love it! Wish you the best of luck!
