I hate to ask this about the C12/U67 but...

Hey there.

Well I'm a firm believer in listening to things & making decisions based on what I hear - but this is kinda different - so here goes...

I've always done my vocal tracks at a local studio using a Neumann U67 with their mic pre amps (Vintech I think).

The studio I normally use for my vocal tracks is booked fairly solidly for the next month & would like to get our album finished. I use this other place because they have a U67 which sounds good on my voice as well as a nice room for vocals & an engineer so I don't have to pay attention to the engineering but more on my performance.

The next nearest sudio is about 3 hours away. They don't have a U67 - but their vocal mic is an AKG C12 - they tell me they have Neve 1272's, Focusrite ISA 430 & some other less than exciting pre amps.

My problem is trying to decide if it's worth the effort to drive 3 hours & get my vocals done with the AKG vocal chain.

I know it's a tough question to answer - but I'm looking for any insight into the sonic similarities/differences in the U67 & AKG C12.

I own a Great River MP2NV - and am wondering if this will help or hinder the AKG/1272 combination they are wanting me to use.

Thanks,

Either be patient for the next month or take a chance on the something that sounds like it might not be that bad. If you decide to go take your preamp and decide between yours and theirs.... you never know, it could sound better. Only one way to find out.

I am not a pro + have never used either mic, but the Green Day album has C12's on the toms, and they sound damn good...

I wish I had a C12. That's a very nice vintage tube mic. You never know, you might like a vintage rock sound better than your normal Neumann, but you didn't say what style of music you're recording...

My philo. is that if you're not at the tier you want to be in the end, then what could it possibly do to try different (even crazy) new equipment. If you're making tons of new fans with the U67, and it makes you smile and sleep better, then I'd wait, but if it's just good, then, who cares.

The vintage C-12 is a great mic- it may or may not work well with your voice. Just make sure its not a C-12VR, which is very different than a vintage C-12. Many studios will leave out the 'VR' part when mentioning that mic, which is a bit shady in my opinion....The compliment of mic pres they have lead me to think this may be the case, as there's a very large price gap between the two versions.

The C12 doesn't sound at all like the U67 to me if that's a consideration. Then again maybe you will prefer it. It's a great sound .

For vocals the main differences to my ears are that the C12 has a brighter (but not harsh) top and the two mics' mids are quite different. The Neumanns' are beefier.

Not even close.

Very different sounds on vocals.

If you were a woman i would say go for it(C12's sound better on female vocals).

Best bet is to rent a U67 and bring it to the studio you will record in.

i wouldn't mix and match on songs as that would cause some more work during mixing, but from song to song, to everyone who listens to it ,it's going to sound like your voice whether it's a c12 or an sm57...bono uses a $90 mic and affects millions of people...worry about the music not the technology.
