Lawson EQ-CQ and Geen Lawson - big props!!!

Just wanted to share a very positive experience with Gene Lawson. Bought a used 8-channel Lawson EQ that he used to make in the 80's. Plugged it in - sounds quiet and horrible. WTF? I thought it must be broken or something. Called Gene. He took the time to talk to me for like half an hour explaining stuff about his EQ and how it should be hooked up. I was seriously impressed. After that I called him 3 more times to clarify stuff about connecting the unit and he took my call every time and was patient and helpful. Not many manufacturers support the gear they stopped making over 20 years ago. Finally I figured out my balanced/unbalanced connection and now the EQ works like it should and sounds beautiful. It was made to copy a NEVE 8232 console EQ. Awesome.

Well, Neve consoles are hardly neutral sounding. Although this EQ was supposedly copied straight from the board and from what I understand doesn't have the transformers (I guess the transformers were somewhere else on the channel strip). For me it's difficult to talk about the sound of these EQ's. I don't mix individual tracks - I mix while having all the tracks play, and I have very colored compressors in the chain with these EQ's. To my ears they are probably on the clean-ish side but not as neutral as a Speck ASC's (which are excellent, by the way).

As for the sound quality, they do the job.

If your looking for that classic warm Neve 10'series module with those big old transformers, this isn't it. This is a fairly clean IC opamp eq.
Not bad, worth the $275 I paid for my 2 ch.
