Best 8x8 MIDI I/O DIGI MIDI I/O questions

I know it's hard to get fired up about MIDI. But waht are the best MIDI I/O's for Mac OS X. I have long used Emagic stuff but since they got bought by apple their support for all their older products is a little lacking and I fear units like the AMT8 will eventually be obsolete. That being said, what are your picks? And does anyone know if the DIGI MIDI I/O supports core midi? And how does it perform?

The Edirol UM880 might be the most useful piece of equipment I own:

Midi I/O and very easy to use patchbay. It is solid.
I love it and couldn't live without it, but I do a lot of midi.
It gets me fired up.
I do use a PC but they have mac drivers.

the day they kill midi support
is the day I'll kill my apple

btw I use a unitor 8 with steath card, and a AMT 8 on the mobile setup
that emagic stuff still is the best IMHO

Is the Edirol UM880 able to run as a midi patchbay without computer power on?

I'd like to play my hardware synths without having to turn on my audio PC.

Thanks
