Absolutely. Phil WAS the groove. He just has a very unique 'pocket'. Pushes with the HH, and pulls with K/S... When he left, the band just did not feel the same. As soon as Phil rejoined, BAM: Now it sounds like AC/DC again.

i certainly wasn't slammin phil at all, i really liked the sound he brought to them. i was just thinking of what might give it a different feel since this was listed by rap artists as posiibly one of the first "rap" songs to them.

i love phil, simon wright was ok but lived what chris (?) the bald guy? did with them, he added some fills and stuff

BUT i understand this IS ac/dc's sound

having also seen them live with phil and the other drummers i can say i understand why mutt said that about the click track, phil doesn't sit the tempo real well, which AGAIN is fine cause it fits the sound and song.

by the way the hayseed dixie stuff is pretty damn cool.

I would aim for the original. Especially the arrangement.

If I was in the group myself, I wouldn't even consider going near that classic track.

Sheryl Crows' version of "Sweet Child O'Mine" didn't give her brownie points. In fact it got her booed a few times when she performed it.

And I recall Wingers' version of "Purple Haze"(Although I liked it myself) brought them much criticism at the time. Especially for their first album.

Although I still dont know what to think about Joan Jetts' version of "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap".

I'm looking forward to hearing how you approach this though. Keep us informed.

I agree. And I loved what he did when he joined DIO. AC/DC drumming on DIO tracks was fun to hear.

I am posting before I read the other replies.

Don't make it sound like the original. It will never be as good. Nobody does AC/DC better than AC/DC.

The best covers are always the ones where the band takes a song and makes it their own. Cake (one of my favorite bands) puts a lot of covers on their records. They play the songs like Cake and it always works. Check out their version of "I Will Survive" sometime.

I'll take Ringo over computer drums any day thank you very much......my point was nothing more than that Phil Rudd is an excellent drummer.

simon played for DIO but Phil never did, unless i missed that.

Phil retired after flick of the switch in 83 to new zealand and started a flying business, he re joined in 95.

Ok after much thought I'VE GOT IT (I hope):

An acoustic version! Female singer sings it sulkally and woefully and slow the tempo down. Broken heart style.

Huh? huh-huh? huh!?!

HA! glad you liked the idea - maybe not THAT slow. But the slap echo effect would be cool.

Remember that song Black Velvet from Alannah Myles?

Maybe something along that style? YEAH!!! My juices are flowin' now or is it....OHHHH DAAAAAAAMN.... I spilled my beer....!!!

If you shot for the vibe of the original, the analysis of that groove might be eye opening to some of the younger people in attendence.

I've given up trying to explain groove...

Hey Michael,
I'm in the 'change the sounds but don't change the arrangement' camp. Seems like the workshop participants might get more out of it by having to think out of the box, having to take such a well known work and arrangement, but make mic/pre choices, and then mixing decisions based on the band (Hydrogyn) and the moment, rather than trying to making it sound like AC/DC. Challenging indeed.

Well, it's (almost) done. During the workshop we decided to go close to the original. IMHO Julie did an amazing job singing this track, this was one take and a couple of punch ins, took 15 minutes all together I can't wait to get that band back into the studio next month.

I posted a faded mp3 here: Back In Black

The mix is not final, the snare is a little too loud, the kick a little too low and the out solo is a little loud. You can hear all the workshop guest singing the backing vocals

Before Mutt, people would put a lot of "nose" on the rhythm guitars and then try to squeeze them into the mix. Mutt invented scooping out the midrange on the rhythms to give more space to the lead vocal and guitar. I'd still replicate all that and keep the arraignment the same, and just hi-fi it all up a little. thumbsup

EDIT: Cool! yeah....like that! nice interpetation =)
