Ribbon Mic Myth or Fact?

Someone told me that ribbons should be stored vertically. Storing them horizontally streches the ribbon. All my Royers came in boxes that lie horizontally. What's the deal?

The paper that comes with AEA R84´s advices storing them vertically.

The Royer boxes will stand vertically without a problem.

Discussion starts at post #10. Wes suggests vertical storage of long-ribbon mics to prevent long-term stretching of the ribbon. He has way more experience with ribbons than I'll probably ever have. That said, I just picked up a pair of 44A's that have been sitting in a box (not vertical) for the past 50 years or so, and they sound just fine. Could they sound better had they been stored vertically? I don't know. But I don't have any desire to get these re-ribboned.

hi,

My cheap ribbon mics (RB500) came with a datasheet saying that they MUST be stored vertically - I wondered about the royers so I emailed tech support and got this reply:

You can store your R-121 any way you like. Most ribbon mics need to be
stored vertically to keep the ribbon from stretching, but Royer ribbons
are tougher due to our special "direct corrugation" method that helps
the ribbon hold it's shape and tension much better, You can lay your 121
on it's side for ten years and it'll be fine when you go to use it. The advice
(...storing vertical...) was good as applies to ribbon mics in general, but it
doesn't apply to Royer mics.

Thanks.

seems pretty definitive to me.
