Yep that is what I am waiting for, the tape sim. I do see a problem with it, does anyone know the price they are thinking for the tape sim yet? 3 weeks ago someone there responded to my email and said they would start posting prices in a week. ??? Anyway the problem I see is if they are going to sell the tape sim at $1500 a pair and I can get a real tape machine that the tape sim is trying to copy for $4000.. well do the math. 24 tracks of tape for $4000 or 6 channels of simulated tape for $4500. I know, I know a tape machine has more upkeep and other costs but really when the cost of the thing you are tying to simulate is less than the simulation it does make one think. I guess we will see.

| Me And My Portico!!!!
hello. i just got my portico 5012 (serial #12) a few days ago. to be honest, i really did not need another pre, but, being the gear slut that i am, i decided to get one anyway. well.... i was pleased at the construction of the unit... built like a tank. forget the manual, it's only like 4 pages (this box is a no brainer, people). the external power supply did not piss me off, as it did for some people. now... let me start by saying i am very used to the sound of my Millennias, Summits, APIs, Dan Alexander , and Brent Averill Neve clones as well as some Studer 169 pres. on the first day, i plugged in my synths and samplers. WOW!!! of course, not as transparent as the Mills and Studers, but the output was a warm funky (a good funky) sound. on the second and third days i threw a KMI and 103 on my martin going in to the 5012 with the "silk" blue blinding button engaged. i have NEVER heard my martin sound like that! the tracks jumped out in the mix, it was like butter!!! finally i ran my vocals into the 5012. let me just say i have for the past couple of years, and after many more on "trying" different pre's to suit my voice, i had chosen the millennia stt-1. i have been happily married to the stt-1 for a while, but let me say this... when i recorded my vocals with the 5012 then to a summit tla100a for a touch of limiting i noticed "THAT SOUND" made me get a little more creative with my vocals. "THAT SOUND" was more musical to me. now i am NOT saying that i'll never use my STT-1 again. but now my vocals are married to two. very different sounds. on one song, i even went so far as to record the verses with the STT-1 and then the chorus with the 5012. WOW, i am still drooling! So... here it is.... at the price, or even more than the $1440 i spent the 5012 is a huge value. i need more of these!!! i need everything Neve has planned for the portico line. i need more money!!!! |
