To work in the morning while I'm still a bit tired. Or in the afternoon after a little nap.

No kidding...

the secret weapon to my sound is a 3 foot high giant blue bong named James.

A cup of coffee with lots of half and half, 2 sugars and a piece of chocolate bundt cake.

When i get a session to mix where the drums are programmed, i tend to add more reality. When i have been enjoyed about the sound of the drums, i play them, in solo, loud in the control room from my Yamaha MSP-5. I place two U-87 in cardiode mode on a X/Y stereo configuration at my mix position, facing the back wall and i record the mics on a new stereo track of Protools. Then, in Protools, i reverse the phase on one side of this setreo track and i cut all the low below 400 Hz and all the high above 1.2 kHz. Finally, i find the sweet spot for the medium range. Then i mix it with the drums like an overhead mics.
