U67

Does anyone know of a company that is making a new mic based on the sound of the U67. I know there are plenty of u47 and fet 47 knock offs but I haven't come across any new mics that are attempting to emulate my beloved U67.

From what i understand the soundelux U99 is based on the U67. My boys in hiero use one for there stuff and it sounds pretty good.

god what I wouldn't give for a real U67 ... don't have any experience with the U99 or the other offspring -- but a real U67 would be amazing, wouldn't it...?

I'd seriously check out the Gefell and Beyerdynamic mikes.

Check the Korby kat 4 system. Interchangable capsules. Heard a lot of good things about it.

The u99 is a lot more modern sounding to me than a good U67, the U95 comes closer IMO. Unfortunately they don't make 'em anymore. That said, I thing the M269c is a better mic than a U67, I love mine to death.

Neumann has a trademark on the U67 grill design... therfore, no one can make mics that look like it. The grill around the capsule is big part of the sound. It is hard to sell a remake when the remake doesn't share the phyical attributes.

There was a great read in Tape Op this month from David Bock of Soundelux. He talked about the 3 basic capsule designs for LDC's. The M7/KK47, the KK67 and the CK12. The article said that the vast majority of modern mics derive their capsule from the KK67 which is found in the U67, U87, and M269c. FWIW, I don't think you can get the sound of a U67 in any other mic. The M269c will be closest, having a more open top and less forward mids. I agree that it is a beautiful sounding mic. Either one will do in a pinch though.
