Could an "upgrade" to Lex unit actually go the wrong way??

I have a Lexicon 300 unit in mint condition. I tried selling it but I couldn't get a decent price for it. Then I decided, what the heck, I'll just keep it in the rack as "The Lex reverb" unit, when I need the Lex thing on my guitar tracks.

Then I ran across a thread about Jim Fabiano, who apparently does excellent work upgrading the components in older Lexicon gear. I'm considering maybe having Jim do his magic on this one, it being "The one and only Lex" in the rack. Since I'm recording with it, noise reduction is usually a plus and I tend toward cleaner, more "hifi" material, as opposed to highly distorted tracks.

But now I'm wondering if a conponent upgrade might actually go in the wrong direction. The grainy, thick lush Lexicon reverbs in the older units (I tried the 70 and 91 and I found them thin) must get some of that flavor from the inherent sound of the older components.

Has anyone upgraded a 300? Is it a good thing or a bad thing?
Thanks,
Mike

I don't know the answer to your question, but Jim Williams is another guy who does upgrades to old Lexicon units.

Jim did my lowly Lxp 15 ii ... and it sounds amazing.

Call him, he'll explain the options.
