Thread Starter | Apogee Symphony / Rosetta 800 used WITH an Apogee Ensemble .... can it be done?
Hello, I'm running Logic 8 with an Apogee Ensemble. My Ensemble is my main interface (for monitors etc).... I'd like to add more inputs ( GREAT CONVERTERS) to my set up..... I'd like to go the Apogee Symphony / Rosetta 800 route. Since I'm new to the Apogee world and I can't find ANY info about this (not on the Apogee website, nada)........ here is my question: Can I use the Rosetta 800 & Ensemble TOGETHER ( for a total of 16 inputs of course )? How would that be hooked? I know the Rosetta connects via the Symph card and the Ensemble via Firewire, but how do I use them TOGETHER while using the Rosetta as the MAIN clock (since it's superior to the Ensemble, even though the Ensemble ROCKS!!!!) Any takers??? |

youll have to get an adat card for the rosetta and hook it up via light-pipe to the ensemble.... i dont know if you can clok the rosetta as the main to the ensemble and have logic follow it, but im sure theres a way to do that. or just get a big ben and clock it all to that |

Dan, Like I said in your other threads, this SHOULD all be possible via ADAT but I'm reluctant to say anything because I'm not entirely sure that you're not doing something wrong in your set-up. Interconnection between digital devices via ADAT is a standardized form of connectivity across the audio industry and I'm still not sure why you can't get 16 channels into your computer. There really is no reason why the Ensemble/Ensemble didn't work just like there should be no reason why a Rosetta/Ensemble shouldn't work. They both have Word Clock In/Out as well so clocking either via Word Clock or ADAT shouldn't be a problem either. Why don't you buy from reputable dealer that will guide you through this? You'll be up and running so much more quickly and with much less pain than relying on forums for your technical support. I feel your pain though. You've got the money and all you want is the gear to work but sometimes you gotta bite the bullet and pay a little more and get service that is focused entirely on getting you up and running. Take care and good luck buddy, R.

Thread Starter | Thanks Ol' Betsy! Yes, I remember your response regarding the Ensemble....this thread was for the Rosetta of course. I know/knew that there was no support for 2 Ensembles so that's why I was hitting up the Rosetta tree. My thoughts were to get a Rosetta (to 8 more channels) or RETURN the Ensemble and get a Symphony System (a $8,000 Symphony system that is, plus another 4-5K of preamps....yes, I have some good preamps right now, but I'd need 6 more channels) OR get a Metric Halo 2882 X 2 system........... so that's where I was at..... Well, Bret from Apogee called today and left a message (of course I wasn't available to receive his call when he DID call!) and he said that YES indeed there WAS a way to use TWO Ensembles together...... I'll probably talk to him on Monday hopefully. So, the jury is still out! I'd really LOVE the idea of being able to use 16 channels of Ensemble....8 of their wonderful preamps and 8 of MY pres! This will REALLY help in 99% of my needs. I hope it's a reality! To check out my updates about the Ensemble/Ensemble pairing...check out the below thread: Apogee Ensemble |

You connect the Rosetta with a X Symphony Card to your Symphony Card in your computer. Go Adat Out of your Ensemble into Adat in of your Rosetta for a total of 16 In/Out. I have a Rosetta 800 that I use with a Symphony System as well as a Protools HD system. The Logic/Symphony System is used for remote recording. |

Hey DanRock101, I have both a Symphony mobile card and an Ensemble and have used both a lot with a Rosetta 800. The Ensemble works great and is VERY reliable as an audio interface as is the Symphony mobile card. If you're using an Ensemble as your main interface the only way to plug in the Rosetta 800 is through Lightpipe (ADAT). The only down side is if your using a sample rate greater then 48kHz you only have 4 digital inputs rather then 8 because at 88.2 & 96 the number of channels via ADAT is cut by half. If you have a Symphony Mobile card you can use your Rosetta @ 88.2 and 96 and still have 8 inputs. As far as clocking I believe the Rosetta 800 and the Ensemble both use " Intelliclock" (the same clock) so there isn't an advantage to clocking the Ensemble from your Rosetta. As long as they're talking to each other (Slave the Rosetta to the Ensemble) you're in good shape. Be aware that the Ensemble and Symphony Mobile use different versions of Maestro. If I'm using my Symphony mobile card I uninstall the Ensemble software and vice-versa but it's easy and both work well. |
