Thread Starter | OPINIONS OF KRK MONITORS!!!
I am thinking of getting either KRK v4s or the v6s as additional monitors for travelling with. Does anyone have either and had any success with mixing on them? I am not interested in opinions on any other monitors, just these babys.

Opinions about monitors tend to be rather pointless.
It's TOTALLY a personal thing... one person gets on well with a set of speakers and another person may do horribly with them.
It's not even about whether they sound "good" to someone, or even to you.
It's all about what they make YOU want to do...
So if one set of speakers makes ME add too much middle, or not enough top or whatever, then they're not right for me.
The speakers that, when I work on them, they tend to make me do the 'right' thing, and feel comfortable, like I know what I'm hearing... those are the right speakers.
FOR ME.
I've never got on well with KRK's.
but as I said... lots of people do well with them.
There's, unfortunately, NO substitute for trying speakers for yourself.

It depends on how critical you need your monitors. I have a set of V4's in my Studio B and they sound fine and are perfect for edited drums and comping tracks but I have a set of ADAM's in my main room.

IMO, the old 7000B's are a great speaker when paired with a nice poweramp, and they're really good for orchestral/scoring work. The V4 II's are pretty cool sounding for a inexpensive active pair. At that price though, I'd also check out the M-Audio line. The E8, are really nice, but at that price, I'd get into a pair of ADAMs but that's just me. Most of the KRK's have a really punchy midrange that gives me a headache if I work on them for too long. However the ones I mentioned I didn't think had that characterestic.

I bought the V6II's last fall, after scrutinizing the entire inventory at GC over 2 days of listening. I really wanted Dynaudio BM6A's but finances were limiting. Hands down, the KRK's beat out everything else; Events, M-Audio, Mackie, Alesis, etc. I haven't done too many mixes to test elsewhere but the few that I have translated extremely well. The comment about the midrange punchiness is actually quite accurate. While the mids come through nicely, the monitors can seem a bit bright after a while. I've owned Event 20/20's, Mackie 824's, Alesis M1mk2's, and have mixed on Genelec 1030A's at my old workplace, and I much prefer the KRK's over any of these. Everything just seems tight and controlled on them, which I very much like.

The company that designed my studio recomended against them. I've used V-8 ( one one project) and and A/B'd with and liked the PMC (Don't know the model) and 1032's a lot better.
Asking other opinions on monitors to me is like asking what brand of condoms I like better - It's too personal.
I've seen guys use everything from a Radio Shack speaker to Quested's and make them all work.

I have several sets of speakers. The V series KRKs are a good bang for the buck.
For editing purposes and portability the V4s are great. They're not as loud as the M-audios but I like sound of the V4s a little better.
While mixing on Genelecs I'll usually switch between the V4s and a boombox to check the mix out.
I did a 5.1 mix for video with 5 V4s and a Genelec 7050 sub.
Make sure you get the series 2 V4s.

A good buddy has a pr. of V4's he travels with, but (of course) they're bass-shy compared to other larger units - FWIW, he's a very successful producer/musician/songwriter, and is one of the only "golden ears" people I know and trust. I've only experience with the V8's, and personally don't like them - as the other posters mentioned: too harsh in the mids, and they tend to hurt my ears, even after short(er) listening sessions. Maybe the V4's are the ticket tho - they're quite inexpensive as far as monitors go...

Always liked KRK's for mixing situations where a prolonged session is needed. You can get a mix almost 75% of the way there and then switch over to Genelec's or Adams. They are IMO the best monitor for people who suffer from ear fatigue especially for those of us who are killed by midrange frequencies. They are silky in that area and really allow you to keep perspective.
NOW WITH THAT SAID..I HAVE HAD HORRIBLE RESULTS using them for a final mix. In rushed situations I have tried it and hate the results everytime.

5 x KRK V4's + S12 Sub used here for 5:1 stuff.
Stereo mixes done on Dynaudio BM6a's here. Can't complain. I've a small control room, 18' x 12', so the V4's work great...Yes they're a wee bit harsh but you get used to them...they look cool (impress client consideration!!!)... they don't flatter as much as Genelec's...I came from NS10's...so was kinda used to that sound of monitor

I almost mix exclusiv on KRKs.
Beginning with the KRK9000b I moved to the Expose E8ts.
The stereo imaging is amazing, the details are so great, that I could
hear every detail I need to hear.
I can't comment on the new V Series, but I could say that I had the
feeling that the 9000b and later the E8t sounded like they were from
another company. All the other stuff like the 6000, 7000, rock,... were
really unusable for my work.

Yeah! the old 9000's. I still have and use a pair in one of my rooms. I used to have them up with Tannoy Little Golds and NS-10s. I sold the Tannoy's a while ago and miss them.
I've heard many people say the Expose E8t's are in another league. I'm guessing that's KRK's answer to the Genelec/Quested market. Wouldn't mind trying them out in my room.
For my needs which are very close to the editing and portability needs suggested above I find the V4's more than sufficient. I also like the V6's. It's really down to personal taste and requirements.

I AM USING KRK COSE I FOUND THEM CHEAP, BUT I HEARD THAT THE HAFLER ARE THE MOSTE LINEARE MONITORS IN THE WORLD AND NO BODY OF U MENTIONED IT!!! SHAAME!!
