My understanding is that both were used .... but ultimately, it's a great sounding 251 no matter what.

rll,

We did a similar test and the Soundelux 251's we tested had the trademark tonal characteristics, but none of the detail. We found the Tele USA 251 really shined, and beat or stayed right there with the originals. The Soundelux (if working) and (if you get a good price) is a good deal for the money considering the dollar difference. There was a significant sound difference, especially when detail was exposed. Test Results: Out of 5 engineers, all with years of studio experience....
no one pick SD, 3 picked Tele USA, and 2 picked the real ones. I was one of those that picked the Tele USA. We did not record the test, but if we are ever together again, and bored enough to do it again, and have a SD around, we will relive it and record it. Needless to say, doubtful.

"Each mic has its sound... each type of mic has a general sound and the final 15% is up to that particular mic. There is a general sound to each type of mic."

Absolutely. WAY too much is made out of individual variations of gear, unless a given piece is downright defective.

Fender amps from the Sixties were different from amp to particular amp too, but all guitar players can speak about the sound of a Fender Deluxe vs a Bassman, vs. a Twin, etc, and know exactly what they are talking about....so I don't think it's too much to ask up here what mics sound the closest to a 251, or 47, etc...
