Thread Starter | 1176/1178 sonic differences
I'm looking at picking up a urei 1178, they still seem pretty easy to find. I've heard they differ from the sound of an 1176. All vintage 1176's I'm sure differ slightly from box to box, rev. to rev. but what about the question in general? Can you do the 4 button trick (or 2 button, same thing) with an 1178? Thanks dyno Fertile Ground Studios www.dougploss.com |

some 1176 differ TOTALLY from rev to rev, so if you are making a comparison to an 1178 you need to be more specific. The last rev of the 1176 (not the reissue thing) has similar topology to an 1178. dave |

So, did they start producing 1178's after the later 1176's came out? Thanks, dyno |

I usually find 1178s a little duller than 1176s. The behaviour of compression seems very similar. You can do 'all buttons down' ratio trick with both 1176 and 1178. Good luck!

Actually, there's little in common between 1176 and 1178, other that both are FET-based compressors. While the 1176's are mostly discrete components (yes, even the latest revision, though it used an opamp as input), the 1178 is all-IC-based. 1178 is not a bad compressor by any standards, but it's simply not as near a relative of the 1176'es as the name tries to indicate.. The 1178 sounds more like an 1176 than any other compressor does, but there are some major topology differences. The 1178 circuit has no input transformer, and uses opamps instead of discrete transistors in the amplifiers and detector circuit. The output driver is an opamp with two driver transistors and does use a transformer. Rev G through K of the 1176 also used an opamp input stage. but even these last, and certainly least, of them had a fully discrete output section. -CZ |
