Neve 183/283 difference

Hi,

I need to get some new boards for a couple of 1883 modules. What´s the difference between the 183 & 283 boards? Can I use either? The modules I have (the ones that don´t miss the boards) seem to have B283AM (half-filled) modules, see pic.

Thanks.

Size is about the only difference... functionally they're interchangable [though you still need to check the bias!!]... the B183's board was a bit larger than the B283's but there was all the same stuff in all the same places on both.

If you need any let me know... I have a few hundred of them kicking around in all different states of filled, half filled, recapped, not recapped, working, not working... etc.

Thanks Fletcher,

I need 8 of the 283AM (half filled). I don´t mind doing some recapping as long as the boards are working.

Will send an email.

So ther are half filled and Fully filled 183s and 283s. That is established.

my question i would like to add to the mix this.

what are the differences betweenhalf and fully filled cards ( aside friom the obviou bit of having more stuff on em)

where would someone use one or the other, do certan modules Need fully filled, and other only half.

if a fully filled card were put into a module that normally takes a half filled, would that change/add anything or be a waste.

a list of the modules and the corresponding required card would be great

cheers to anyone that can help

a fully stuffed 183/283 has a pre-amplifier stage and an output stage. You would find a fully stuffed card in a buss amplifier like a 1272 or channel modules (pre/EQ) like a 1073. The fader loop would be between the stages.

A half stuffed card is just the output stage and is generally found in router modules like your 1883.

it would not change or add anything. I guess you could look at it as a waste.....

sure, give me a couple weeks! just kidding. 183/284 boards were used in many Neve modules from 80xx series consoles. A full list would take a while. You will find fully stuffed 183/283 boards in channel amplifiers (1063-1069, 1073-1080, 1084, 1086, 1088, 1089, 31102, 31104, etc) and some line amplifiers (1272). Half stuff boards can be found in routers such as the 1883, 1903, 1943, 1993, etc. I am obviously leaving out the class AB modules which do not use 183/283 boards at all. Basically, just about any Neve module that is class A will have some form of a 183/283 board in it. There are a few exceptions (older Germanium stuf for example).

that is helpfull and explains a bit.

i wonder if a 33122 is class A ro AB. i know it is the Discreet version of the (3)3114/3115/3122/3129 channel amps)

i know it doesn't have 183-283s in it (just opened mine last night to see what cards were in it... 437 :( .. whatever it still sounds great.

So the second half of the 1/283s is the Preamp side. Hmmm ok. (planning away i go for DIY stuff....)
